Video to DvD Howwww

After being nag by my son for a while i decided to do something about it.
Copy all my Videos to DVD, One small problem is what hardware/software is required. My laptop is only 4 months old so i guess i have the sockets,and i do have some software to backup my DVDs. But more help is required and would be welcome.
