Video Playback Problems

I am currently using a combination of DVD Decrpyter-->DVD Shrink-->Nero Burning ROM Image Recorder-->Pinnacle Instant Copy 8.

Not only is this a time consuming way of backing up my movies, it also yields some playback errors that looks like discolored pixelation intermittently throughout the movie. I would guess that it might take place during the compression process, though I've tried using Pinnacle Instant Copy to compress the movie with similar results.

My DVD Burner is a NEC 1300A, and I'm running XP on a Athlon 1.4GHz with 512Meg Ram.

What I am wondering is that if this is a common problem to get visible pixelated errors during playback? If anyone can recommend some successful alternatives to this method, please do so.

Thanks alot.
Jeff.

the pixelation may be due to high compression of the video, in which case ur only alternatives are to strip out things from the dvd, leaving more room for the main movie, or to use higher quality methods. does the pixelation look like blurry blocks?

Yes, it's like a string of miscolored blocks. It is more comparable to a cluster of hot pixels than just compression artifacts. This has only occured when I was compressing a movie for backup (most of the movies I've had to compress onto one cd). I've used dvdshrink and instant copy's compression with similar type results. About 95-99% of the playback is good but the errors are glaring and distracting when viewing the backup.

Is there another program that you could recommend to try? I would like to resolve this problem rather than repeatedly make these compression. Another alternative is to split the dvd's into two discs though I would prefer to avoid this. Thanks for your help in this matter.

Jeff.
