video capture cable

Is there an available adaptor for firewire cable to composite or S-video?
My VHS player don't have a firewire output for video capture.
Please help if you know and where I can buy it.
Thanks in advance.

Firewire is like a high speed serial port, digital information in the form of 1 and 0's. A Composite/S-Video is a Frequency Modulated analogue representation of the video and audio signals.

These 2 formats bear no resembelance to one another and a simple cable option is NOT a solution for you.

Sounds expensive!

Other alternative is to add a PCI card for capture - a TV card with video in and recording capability, or even go in via USB with something like the Hauppage Nova-T

The -PVR (Personal Video recorder) models have hardware MPEG encoding, but I'm pretty sure you CAN record from the others - but with higher CPU load and a less powerful codec - converting down to MPEG later, but you need more storage that way if using MJPEG or other lower compression codecs.

It is expensive but digitalx wanted firewire input from an analogue source, so...

Yep, depending on what you are trying to do a regular analogue capture card would be fine.

USB capture devices I believe support VCD res max. As for hardware MPEG encoding, you are probably better off doing an huffyuv, VBLE, etc. AVI capture and then filtering with AVISynth before converting to MPEG, especially if going for DVD as you can do a multipass CCE encode.

Thanks to all your inputs.
Actually, I bought "ADS Pyro DV Platinum PCI card bundle" with firewire input/output cablein it.
My camera supports firewire but my VHS player don't have firewire output.
My problem is I'm limited only to use it with my camera only & not my VHS & other non-firewire compatible videocams.
I hope there is a low cost box converter to convert my firewire signals to S-videoor composite signals to be able touse my VHS & other classic video cameras.

The Canopus actually seems to one of the CHEAPER offerrings.

No way of piping it THROUGH your camera is there?

AHA!

A PYRO Analog converter - and a limited time offer price of of $209.95
The also have a DAZZLE model at $239.49

Both seem to have a pile of software, some of which you probably got with the other card - apparently available as a bundle with the first one, so it may be worth speaking to your supplier (if you got it recently) to see if they would allow you to upgrade at the bundle price if that's better.

If that's too dear, your other option is to use another PCI card for analog capture, or if you could do with a better video card, upgrade to one with "All in Wonder" (ATI) or "ViVo" (ATI/Nvidia) capability.

I'm amazed how cheap a firewire interface is - and how expensive the peripherals are!

Probably not the same software, as your one sounds like a "special" - but this is BOTH pieces of hardware together!

Thanks! I got it, the ADS Pyro-AV Link!
This is quite costly but I have no choice.:D

More power!!!!!

Well, I hope you did some more checking, but I couldn't spot anything else for less that $299

I hope it was clear that I don't know the place at all, since I'm in the UK - I'd have taken the cheap way out, and gone with an extra TV card to do the analog capture,
