VIA KT333 Chipset Vs AMD 761 Chipset

hi!!

i want to upgrade my motherboard for AMD Athlon XP 1900+

I have PC2100 DDR RAM 266 Mhz & NOT PC2700 (333 Mhz)
( please consider the RAM FSB that i own)

i was wondering which chipset would give me a better performance?

AMD 761™ north bridge & VIA 686B south bridge

OR

VIA KT333 north bridge & VIA 8233A(CE) Southbridge

without the consideration of which motherboard make i use.

please HELP!!!!!

well I must go against what pokopiko said.
I don't think the amd 761 chip gives as good performance as the KT266A nor 333 chips (via).
All the via boards I have owned & tested for AMDMB.com have never given me a problem and they have given the best speed results & stability performance (KT266A that is). Just all depends on you choosing the right type of drivers.

At present I don't see a big performance gain with the KT333 boards, especially since you will be using the 266 DDR RAM, so better off that you get the boards featuring KT266A.
I would recommend either Asus, Abit, Shuttle, Soyo, Soltek as my top choices (even Epox which I use).
Good luck.

If you were talking AMD 76x chipset COMPLETE, I'd say great, bomproof!

Once you introduce the VIA southbridge chip, you may as well go all the way the a full KT266 solution - I believe the VIA chipsets have stronger memory performance.

The SIS 735 chipset - and the ECS K7S5A (now S6A available)
Love 'em or hate 'em - they are cheap, and go pretty well - some older batches were trouble with Athlon XP - but they should be up to scratch now.

An overclocking BIOS - with many intermediate clock settings, can be found in overclocking forums - the main weakness is the lack of multiplier adjustment, so unless you practice CPU bridge surgery, the only tweak possible is to up the FSB a little using the OC BIOS (S6A apparently HAS settings up to 166FSB included)
DDR266 (133) can often be made to work at 150 (DDR300)

I have a m/b with KT333 and sth bridge VT8233A running an Athlon 1800+. I also use PC2100 DDR ram. Had it 2 months now and is runnng fantastic. Did not re-install Windows2000 when changing mb from old KT133 to this one either and have never seen a BSOD.

Highly recommend the ASUS A7V333

go with the kt333 looks good

dont forget to check out hardware revies

w*w.toshardware.com has the bigest round up ive seen

also w*w.viahardware.com & ww*.socketa.com

good luck

tomwshardware is a place where tests are inconsistent (changing them constantly for each review). Plus they are jerks:

would suggest you try the amdmb url I keep posting here:

you have reviews & all the links to many review sites & latest gear, plus a great forum.
good luck
