Hi all.

OK, bear withme as I'm very new to DVD burning.

No matter what I burn,be it small files, large files, files with long names or short names, various file typres etc etc the discs I burn are always ether totally uselssor incredibly slow to use. By that I mean you stick them into your machine and it takes forever to do anything with them and half the stuff is corrupt.

I'm using Nero 6 Pro, I've tried a Lite On and a Pioneer burner and I'm using Verbatim + discs at 2x, 4x and 8x speed.

I never get errors during the burn, they just dont work once complete!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best.

Larky.

try scanning the discs with DVDInfoPro to see how readable they are. not getting errors during the burning process isn't the same as not having actual errors on the disc afterward.

Hi.

Well, first things first,I did a check on one of the DVD's with DVDInfoPro and it was all good.

I'm burning data files, PDF's, images, HTML pages, Maya files, texture maps, just general stuff. I have tried another brand of discs but I get the same fault. I'm wondering if it's a naming convention thing, as some folderhave very long names:

Facial Blendshapes and Morphing Techniques.pdf -{lectures}-.rar

stuff like that. Some are even longer!! Wondering if that could be it. I will try another disc, but this is getting expensive. Imay just go buy a portable 200gig HD!!!

@ Larky,

I suggest that while you are attempting to figure out what the problems is that you acquire top of the line DVD media. Also until you prefect your DVD burning technique that you use DVD±RW media.

What operating system are you using? An operating system using the NTFS File system (Window 2000 or Widows XP) has fewer problems when working with DVD's.

Hi.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm running XP Pro, using the NTFS system. I have now tred soe Datasafe discs, same thing!!

However, I have burnt one disc which works perfectly. I re-named everything to shorter filenames and it's working fine. :) so, I think that may have been the problem.

But maybe not, time will tell I suppose.

Thanks for all the help.

How is your machine set up? Do you have anti-virus software running. If you do try disabling it. I have had problems like this with a cr writer years ago and it was a compatability issue with the OS the drive and software. Report back on your setup and we may have a better chance of understanding the problem. The verbatim disc are usually a good brand and very compatable.

Are you closing the discs you burn?

Hi.

Yep,I do finalize the discs.

OK, I have Win XP Pro SP1 with all current updates. I am running Ahead Nero 6 Pro, a Lite On 8x DVD +- drive, a P4 3.06gig 800FSB Hyperthreaded CPU, an Abit server Mobo, 2 gig registered DDR Corsair RAM, 2x 80gig Segate 7200pm HD's and an nVidia FX5950 GPU.

I have just burned 4 DVD rips to a disc and the machine crashes when I try and play any of the movies. They play fine from the HD.

This is really annoying!!

Thanks for all the advice so far.

ADDED: I just got a cyclic redunancy check error when trying to open one of the files. Does that help?

I have also now tried Recordnow Max, which errors out after the verification and gives the same result.

Best, Larky.

Hi.

OK, I have been sent an update patch by Ahead as their technical team were saying it was a bug in my version, and it now seems to be working all hunky-dory! :D

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

Best.
