VCR VHS Tape To DVD±R ?

Hello Folks,

I have a Sony DRU-500AX DVD±R Recorder and would like to copy my VCR VHS tapes to DVD±R’s.

Perchance could anyone point me in the right direction as to where I could obtain an informative tutorial on the subject? Also if possible could you provide recommendations as to the best software and/or hardware to use for the task?

Regards,

The way I do it is somewhat costly, but in the middle between the best and worst. I use a Dazzle PCI capture card that can capture MPG2 (DVD quality) on the fly from SVHS or Component (RCA jacks) video. The Dazzle cost me about $225 -- you can buy a Pinnacle product that has SVideo/SVHS and RCA jack inputs for about the same. Cheaper USB devices work OK for VCD, but not for DVD quality MPG2 captures. One of the newer series ATI All-In-Wonder (AIW) cards will also capture in MPG2, but sometimes the results are not as good.
An alternate way would be to use a DV movie camera if you already have one instead. Most Sony DV's will let you stream the video from analog (SVHS / RCA) out the firewire to your PC. You take the huge AVI file and output to MPG and author to DVD VOB format. I have also taken old 8mm home vids and borrowed an 8mm deck to record to DV tapes for archive, then later output via firewire to AVI's with Scenealizer (also Pinnacle or Adobe Premier work, but cost a lot). Then convert the AVI to MPG2 via Vegas Video after cutting out the bad parts. Use TMPGEnc DVD Author to make chapters and render VOBs to burn in Nero. Sounds like a lot, but once you do a few, it is only the time involved, not much actual work.

If you don´t have a capture device you could get the A250 MyVivo from Leadtek for about $199 us this is a Geforce 4 ti 4200 with in/out video capabilities and comes with a capture app that lets you encode to mpg2 in real time with a very good quality, you can also capture uncompressed for an excellent quality only problem with that is hd space. With this option besides a capture card you´ll get a good 3D accelerator.

I use to have a Dazzle DVCII and they have a great quality but to get it working is a real pain, this model is the best I´ve seen from Dazzle but they have this issue with the power where you need to restart your system several times before the card starts working.

Also as ipdave said you could use the DV way if you have the connectors only thing is that I would recommend to encode using Cinecraft Encoder instead of the Mainconcept codec that comes with Vegas I think it has a better quality.

Hello Folks,

Thanks for your response to my inquiry.

I go a used Dazzle Digital Video Creator II on eBay for less than $90 bucks. I’m going to see how this works and I’ll go from there.

Once again thanks for you input.

Coaster, goto h++p://www.spawns.dk/svcd/Index.htm for help with the DVC-II, and a link to the updated MovieStar 4.25 Software that fixes most issues. Also try the free Bugsy *needs MovieStar to work* to capture with the card..

I use the Hauppage winpvr 250. Has audio/video inputs.
I take from camcorder or vcr and input to card. I use software to setup card to record in vcd, svcd, dvd (regular), dvd (long), or (dvd extended play) to record. I actually took 3 workout of my wifes and put them on 1 dvd. She was gonna order the dvd but I said let me see if I can make it. Then I used Ulead movie factory 2.0 to author it.

I have a legit copy of My Sonic DVD that came with my Verbatim DVD +RW Drive, but need hardware to transfer it to the Hard Drive. Would ATI All In Wonder allow such a thing? IF so, I may look into the 9700 version.

@ desavedo,

If your are attempting to install the My Sonic DVD program to your hard drive just place the installation CD in your Verbatim DVD +RW Drive and the auto run function on the CD will install the program.

yea, my bad, i wont edit my post above, but what i meant was that the software is installed, but i dont have the Svideo in capability or anything to caputre and bring the video from the outside , into my system. I think i need Dazzle hardware or Avermedia or something, but i don't know which is good.

Avermedia are very good infact still using an old TV98 card in my tower, mind you it's hooked up to my cabel tv box.
The capture from that card from what I can remember was very good.
