VCD with PowerDVD

When using PowerDVD XP to play VCD files (either from harddrive or CD), the video and audio got seperated. The video plays and the audio trails a few seconds behind. I went back do PowerDVD help and took another look at the references for playing VCD files and found that my VCDs are home made VCDs and they don't comply to PowerDVD listed audio/video bitrate. My VCDs' video bitrate is not a constant 1.15 Mbps and audio bitrate is not always at 224 Kbps (sometimes less). My question is: does this have anything to do with the audio part lagging a few seconds behind the video? WinDVD and Windows Media Player play these files fine.
Thank you in advance for any response.

PowerVCD should be able to plaback just about any MPG file regardless if it in VCD format or not. If the original "VCD"'s were not make correctly with the audio in sync then PowerDVD is not going to correct that problem.

Try playing the files in Windows Media Player (though it suffers from sync problems itself at times) or better still, WinDVD. If the Audio is still out of sync, I suggest you read in the Tutorial section a Tut that tells you how to fix it.

WinDVD and Windows Media Player play the VCD fine. When I recorded the file, it was a hair out od sync and I used TMPGEnc and re-sync the file. Like I mentioned earlier, WinDVD and WMP play the file fine.
Thanks for the reply. I will read what you suggest.
Any other idea why?

If WinDVD and WMP play the mpg files fine and in sync then the problem lies with PowerDVD. Remember, PowerDVD was designed to play DVD's (mpeg2) not mpeg1's originally. It could not even play SVCD's (also mpeg2) until recent editions. It comes free with a LiteOn and most other DVD ROM units, dont expect perfection from a free program.

Go with the strength and use WinDVD. It has a better quality playback IMHO anyway. All sorts of problems occur also if you have more than 1 DVD playback software installed on your system. There can be codec clashes causing your problem also.

I started out with PowerDVD on this notebook and started having this sync problem. I used WMP and everything was good. Then came WinDVD. I agree with you that WinDVD provide better picture.
Anyway, I appreciate your help. Out go PowerDVD.
Again, thanks.
