VCD Creation Problem

Hello There!

I used DVD2SVCD to create a vcd from a ntsc dvd, but made a big mistake: Somehow I changed the "Resize to" option inside the "Frameserver" tab to "DVD" instead of "VCD" and as a result ended up with a big movie file, but with the wrong resolution. Is there a way I can fix this? I don't want to start the whole process again, if I could avoid it somehow. I tried to use tmpenc to convert the file, loaded up the VideoCD NTSC template and converted just a short bit of the file. The problem was just that video playback was a bit chubby. I had a look at the file info using powerDVD and the difference between my faulty file and the newly converted one were:

Faulty file:

Source picture resolution: 720x480 (525/60)
Frame Rate: 24.00
Bitrate: 1.12Mbps
---------------------
Converted file:

Source picture resolution: 352x240 (525/60)
Frame Rate: 30.00
Bitrate: 1.15Mbps

Could someone tell me what I did wrong, or if there's any way I can fix my file?

Any advice is very welcome,

KiwiCom

Start again, it isn't really going to be any slower than re-encoding your re-encode anyway and will be much better quality... I mean 720x480 @ 1.12Mbps can't look good.

As for where you went wrong... If you are encoding a 23.976 source at 29.976fps then make sure you do a 3:2 pulldown.

Isn't there a way only to change the resolution from 720x480 to 320x240? I mean, this is what went wrong when I setup dvd2svcd. Thanks for the advice anyway, looks like I have to do the whole thing over again..ZZzz

Sorry, there is nor way just by cahnging the resolution numbers in the header will fix the problem. What you made is at dvd resolution, end of story. Only thing you can do is re-encode the original again.

DVD2SVCD automatically does a 3:2 Pulldown for you if its needs to be done. C_D, I would suggest you actually try running DVD2SVCD at least once to see the options available and what it can actually do. Besides, a VCD can exist as a 23.976 fps video and plays back on an NTSC TV, all VCD Players (DVD Players also) automatically converts it to 29.97. Its part of the VCD specs. No pulldown needed.

Was refering to them having problems encoding their 23.976fps source to 29.976 using TMPGEnc without DVD2SVCD.

They asked what the problem was and although I am not exactly sure what "playback was a bit chubby" means, I believe it is because they encoded their 23.976fps source at 29.976fps without activating 3:2 pulldown in TMPGEnc.

I know you can have a 23.976fps VCD, but the fact is that KiwiCom created one at 29.976.

I'm sorry if I caused some confusion about what I wanted to do. I didnt mean to reincode the file from 23.97fps to 29.97fps. The only thing I want to change is the resolution - all I want to do is just to create a 100% compliant vcd out of my faulty file. And because I'm not sure how to setup tmpgenc manually, I used the VideoCD NTSC template that came with the program. Could you tell me which settings I would have to use to reach my goal?

What I meant with "chubby" playback is that the recoded video doesnt seem to run as smooth as my first encoded video. This one plays correctly on my computer, but well...the resolution is wrong.

As you stated it would probably be easier just to encode the whole thing from the dvd again, but still I would like to know if I could successfully reincode my faulty file using tmpenc. Hope I'm not getting on your nerves, If I am, I apologize for that.

To start with re-encoding a file thats be re-encoded is not a good idea. Always go from the original for best results.

However, you can re-encode the file you made with TMPGenc. Read the http://www.cdrbase.com/showthread.php?t=160 tutorial for settings. As your original was at 23.976fps, you need to load in the FILM VCD Template into TMPGenc, anything else will make it jerky.

Thanks for the advice ChickenMan! I know you're right about the quality thing, but I just wanted to try out and compare.
