Using DVD Shrink 3.2 With Great Results

My setup: Pent 4 (2.2g) WinXP-Prof with a LG gsa4120b writer (a111 firmware) using DVD-R media.

I'm posting this in the hope other's do not make the same mistake(s) as I.
I'll admit to the commercial-has-to-be-better-than-freeware syndrome that caused me many a headache & expensive coaster.

I was having terrible results when using DVD Decrypter & Nero (6.3.120) for *backing-up* DVD movies.Everything worked fine until I tried playing the finished product on a stand-alone DVD player (most played ok via the 4120b writer). When trying to play the back-up dvd's on a stand-alone player I would soon see artifacts that gradually turned into stuttering & finally frozen video. Also had alot of sound/video sync problems.
At first I figured my biggest problem was media related. However, after trying many different brands like,Maxell,Ritek,Prodisc,TDK,ect,& ending up with the same problems it FINALLY dawned on me that maybe my problems were not hardware, but software related. One of the pgm's that came with my LG writer was Power Producer Gold ver 2.I tried it,in place of the Nero software,& had immediate results to the good re the sound/video sync problems. If I used MS MovieMaker to capture live or recorded TV pgm's & Power Producer Gold to burn them to DVD all was well with excellent sound/video sync.PP Gold does have a TV capture option but MovieMaker allows for better screen conrol, brightness, contrast, ect.

However I was still having BIG problems using Power Producer Gold to burn my back-up dvd movies.
I decided to try DVD Shrink as a last resort for the entire process. If only I had done this from the start!

I have no idea why Nero does such a poor job on my machine or why Power Producer can only perform at 50%.

But with the combination of DVD Decrypt & DVD Shrink I not only have excellent results I can now burn my dvd media @ 8x! Something Nero or PP Gold would never allow.
My back-up dvd movies now play on both dvd stand-alone players I have access to,a Toshiba SD3925 & a Sylvania 850c,with very little artifact or sound/sync problems.

Overcoming my freeware phobia was made ALOT easier with the availability of these two great programs,DVD Shrink & DVD Decrypt.

Well Al you found out like A LOT of other members that Nero just sucks for DVD backup and that in this case freeware is better that payware!! :) Also you may not want to burn the media at higher speeds than its rated for, in fact must people recommend not burning higher then 4x or 6x cause of the high error rate you will get on the media. Other than that thanks for sharing. :)

No problem re the 8x speed burn as the LG 4120b is rated to be able to burn a DVD -R @ 8x & a DVD +R @ 12x.

Before the using of DVD Shrink I'd not been able to burn a 8x disc,in this case a Prodisc DVD-R.My max burn speed had been limited to 4x.

Another excellent reason to use DVD Shrink!.
