used buffer level problems on Copying and Burning

hi peeps...hoping you can help me...i had reason to format my C:/ drive today (bloody kids messing around on it deleting things that they shouldnt..etc etc rant rant...) any way before the format i used Nero 6 to burn and copy cd's dvd's etc etc..with absolute no problems etc etc...using win 98...
after format and the partial instalation(sp..??) of nero...it came back with this sort of reply 'cannot continue you need to update.com***32.dll(cant remember the exact name of .dll..!!)'..unfortunately i dont have the internet at home(using the work at the moment..!!)so was a bit snookered..I was a bit puzzled as to how I got nero to work before the format...???
any hoo as a test i formatted again and put on Win ME...this time nero worked...but having mega probs with it..
my dvd writer is the pioneer 106 d..and had no probs with it before this...

what is happening is the used buffer levels are only reaching 50% and going from there to zero so taking double the time to do tasks (30 minutes to create an image(15 before)...42 minutes to burn a disk (14 before).
I never had to manually configue anything on nero, so cannot imagine i have to tweak it...but on the preference option under Ultrabuffer it is automatically optioned out to use up 35 mb of memory..and on the properties of my dvd player the DMA option isnt ticked....i have tried to see if ticking makes any difference, but to no avail......
What i have done is to copy the newer version of the .dll file to a different partition of my hard drive...so if all else fails i can put Win98 back on and overwrite the .dll....as i say it is baffling me....any help will be loved....
Cheers

Hi since writing this i uninstalled Nero and tried a freeware burner...but took even longer to burn a disk (50 minutes...!!!!...so dont think it is the software...)..The overwriting of the file also prove useless....
My hard drive is 20gb...and I have 2 partitions on it....whenever i have a problem I normally format c:\ only and the prob is corrected......do you think i should format all of my partitions...!!!!
Really doing my head in... :mad: :mad: :confused:

First did you install ASPI drivers? Also yes you want 98 over me and you need DMA ticked. Good luck. :)

Hi...ok me now reporting back.....I installed the drivers from the site listed....It has worked 95%.. :) ...It still takes 20 minutes to burn the dvd...(Like i said normally took 14 minutes)...so maybe something else i need to do...(maybe more up to date drivers...will there be any drivers on the Pioneer site..me thinks)...but 20 minutes is a hell of a lot better than 50 minutes....

The buffer level...inches it's way up to 100%, then slowly inches it's way back to 0%....then whilst the burning is taking place...it does it again......??? :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

thanks for all the help guys

Michael...

you get still buffer underuns, so the problem isn't really fixed yet;
What about the DMA option, i asked above?
and some generally hints are: disabling AntiVirus software before burning, defragmenting your HDDs periodically;

you can attach the Nero logfile here too (but delete your contained serial no.), so we can see, if there are conflicting burning drivers present;

Hi duracell...thanks for the reply....yes i have enabled DMA on all drives (1 x dvd drive and 1x cd drive)...but sstill no change.......I regulary defrag my drives once per month, just to speed things up generally...but what still i cannot get my head around is that the computer/software and drives were all fine b4 the format.....but will get there.....To be honest no sure where i would look for the log file....would it be in the directory where i place Nero..?????...will have a look and the next time i burn a disk i will place it here...(probably after the weekend..)

yes, it's usually stored the Nero installation folder and named "NeroHistory.log";

a few additional questions:
1. What is the chipset of your motherboard?
2. Did you install the related chipset drivers and IDE controller drivers?
You can get the latest chipset drivers at you motherboard (or chipset) fabricator's homepage. But beware of Intel Application Accelerator (IAA) and nForce IDE driver (included the ForceWare package). They are causing more trouble than improving PC performance.
3. And what exactly do you try to do in Nero? Burning a Data DVD, burning a DVD Video image to DVD or doing an "on the fly" copy?
