Upgrading question?

I have a 1.0Ghz AMD Athlon t-bird cpu. I wanted to buy an Athlon XP 1800+ or 1700+. Anything above an XP 1800+ be be a little too expensive. I just want to know is it worth buying one of these processors, considering what I already have? If not, what would be something good to get for under $100.

you will see a bit of an improvement sab. Should be about a 30% increase overall. The Athlon XPs run better than their older brother T-bird, & have better instruction levels now.
It is a good time to upgrade ('cause prices are fairly cheap).
However for your best results, you will need DDR ram & a suitable motherboard (that means a via KT266A/333 chipset *or AMD 761).
So if you're not going to upgrade those, then I would perhaps hold off till end of the year or early next year when you can buy everything else.
Good luck
