Updated with beta-SP - now no "burn-rights" with Nero!

Hello :)

I am new here, so please forgive me if i should have asked a question that's been here before.... but i just spent some 6 hours and the same amount of blank CD's to get a problem solved, with no success.

I upgraded my win XP pro yesterday with the beta of SP2. I've had no trouble with anything except - Nero, version 5.5.6.4. This one is installed on the machine since the days of win 2k, some three years ago. It always worked flawlessly, even after upgrading to win XP, then SP1.

Now, when i start Nero, it comes up with "burn rights are required.....". I googled the net for hours on this, no success. Tried about 150.000 "fixes" and spent hours downloading tools and files via 56k. Nothing helped.

I logged on as administrator (even tough my normal user account has full admin rights - i am the sole user of this machine) and set the "burn rights" from there. Downloaded a program called "Nero BurnRights" as well as "Registry Checker" and "Driver Clean Tool". Uninstalled and re-installed Nero several times. Result: Same as before, it won't detect any CD-drive, neither the burner (Samsung SW 208 B) nor the no-name CD-drive.

I believe the burning engine is ok, because i can burn CD's still via XP's drag-n-drop thingy, and also both Musicmatch Jukebox and Windows Media Player allow me to burn CD's.

The specs of my machine, if that is needed: MB Asus A7A 133, 768 MB of SD-RAM, Duron 1000. HDD 40 GB with some 5 GB on partition c: free (and more on the other partitions). OS Win XP pro, SP2 (beta).

Please help me someone here... i don't want to have to buy yet another CD writing software! This thing worked before..... so it's got to work now too :)

Kind regards....

Welcome Thanh-BKK...:)
First you installed a beta!! Well MS stuff (IMO) is buggy enough with out being a beta so that could be your problem. Also you have XP burning software running and thats know not to play well with others. Taking from RASTABT tut:
IMAPI CD Burning.

Now if you’re using Windows XP it has a built-in (useless) burning engine. That's our view on matter.

It is advisable to disable this, as it can create problems for you. Go to Control Panel>administrative tools>services shortcut.Scroll through the list to"IMAPI CD Burning".Disable it. Or you can use this route Go to My Computer once there go to your Burner and right click it and go to Properties see picture 5.
Disable that and if you still have problems post the log file from NERO. Good luck.

there's enough ppl workin for ms thru-out the world..let them do the guinea piggin & use only stable releases :D ...u'll get less trouble ;)

beta - but... others too.....

Hello again :)

Thanks for the replies. However, the problem is yet unresolved.... here is the precise message that nero gives, when i start the program:

"Under Windows NT4/2000 burn rights are required by Nero to access cd-recorders and cd-rom/dvd-rom drives. Please ask your system administrator for a permission to use Nero."

Hell, i AM the system administrator! This happens regardless wether i am logged on as user "Thanh" or as "Administrator", by the way. "Thanh" has also full admin rights since i am the only user of mjy computer.

It then goes on to NOT-DETECT any CD-drive (yes, not even the DRIVE!) and offers, as recorder, only a virtual device "Image Recorder".

Oh yes, i installed a beta SP. But... typing Nero's error message into google, it came up with many pages with that very same error from many many other people, who don't use that beta SP or even Windows XP! Besides that, Ahead obviously knows of this problem, hence offers an extra application as a free download on it's website, "Nero burning rights". Just that in my case, this doesn't help either.

About that XP burning engine, useless or not, i had it disabled, and it didn't help at all. With it enabled, i can at least get files on a CD... but can't copy CD's, no multi-seesion etc (that last one is crucial - i need to be able to make multi session CD's!).

I am at this very moment downloading that "BurnAtOnce", i will post my success or non-success with it. If it too should fail, i am meanwhile preparing myself to visit a software shop soon. Can you guys recommend me a very good burning software? I need the ability for multi-session, and to copy CD's on fly. Also CD-RW must be available, i have a few of those for backups.

Kind regards.....

THAT works!

Hello.

I downloaded and installed BurnAtOnce with success! It is a bitch to quit, it just won't shut down.... but it recognised both drives correctly, and performs both "copy on fly" and multi session perfectly, which to test did cost me a further two blank CD's.

Now, how do i get the Nero thing back on track..?

Kind thanks for any advice.....

got that alredy.....

Hello again :)

I already downloaded the "Nero Burn Rights" application, it installed and runs - but doesn't change a thing. Any available setting... no success. Even when i do it from the "Administrator" account, Nero still comes up with the same error message.

Is Nero worth it? Well, i don't know.... i have used Easy CD creator previously, but it stopped working after i upgraded from w2k to XP, and after i installed a series of updates to Easy CD Creator i got it working again, but yet still i found Nero is easier to use and also allows me to "overburn" CD's, which didn't work out with Easy CD creator.

Besides those two, i did never try any other burn program. Now i got the BurnAtOnce, but it is not as easy to use and also it persistantly refuses to shut down after use, i need the task manager to get rid of it. Otherwise it works, yes, but it is like "just getting the job done", not much more than XP's own "useless" burn engine.

That's why i asked, can anyone refer me a good burning application..?

Regards.....

Have you ever instal ASPI's drivers?
Second can you post a copy of your nero log with out your serial?
Its called NeroHistory.log and you should find it in C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero

can't find that... but... problem solved!!

Dear PC guy!

I have previously been looking for that log file, but there isn't any file with that name in that folder, the only log i could find was named "nero.txt".

In the meantime i downloaded a proggie called "Deep Burner" which is a freeware as well, and it too works well, altough i can't find an option to "copy a CD".

However, i was on Ahead's website as well, and having a valid legal Nero 5.5 version i was able to download an update, making my 5.5.6.4 become a 5.5.10.56. And guess what?

IT WORKS!!!

I just spent another 3 blank CD's just to test both the Deep Burner and the "new" Nero, and i can only say, all works perfectly again. No more error messages, and both drives recognised and working like a dream, or, like before my upgrade with that beta SP.

ASPI wise, i have read on a website that windows XP uses something different..? Not too sure tough. But however, it is working now again....

I wish to thank all of you who tried to help me :) I hope that some day i will be able to help YOU with an issue... (www.nokiafree.org, if you happen to have trouble with a Nokia... i'm "Thanh" there and that is a field where i have extended knowledge :)

Kindest regards from Bangkok.....
