Unreal II - getting your money back in Ireland.

I bought Unreal II in Dublin on Friday.. brought it home, a 60 euro purchase btw..

Install it > Menu, fine.. Settings, fine.. Start game, no go.. a general protection fault every time..

I browse to the support forums and after reading various posts decide to disable EAX, lower the memory CAS settings.. reset everything ultra-low.. no dice..

Now, I notice a strange thing about the forum, a lot of people just aren't getting a game started for exactly the same reasons..

A read of the manual states, debuggers, emulators are not allowed.. (!?) strange use of english there.. also to switch off AV, Nero is BAD, and various other software, not to be used with game on etc etc..

I mull this over a bit, wait two months for a patch or return for a refund..

I decide to go for a refund, make my way into HMV today (Saturday) and after hearing what I experienced, the clerk, asks coupon or cash, when I answer cash, I have to wait for the floor manager to authorise it, person arrives, unpleasant manner, snottily asks for my name and address (fill it in with a fake one, Willy Schmith..) and I get my money back..

Now the manager is mumbling to another staff member something about CD protection and also I see the product is no longer on sale..

Seems the company releasing Unreal II have gotten a bit over zealous about protecting their product..

Buying a game shouldn't be this kind of experience.. keep those receipts.

I can't believe someone would release such an unstable/fussy game, pity.

Not to worry Strahlen, you are not really missing anything. Unreal 2 is at best a B grade. Sure it has some nice visuals and some decent gameplay, but sladly it is just too flawed for the 60 Euro price tag.

I won't review it again here (there are lots of great ones on the web), but Unreal 2 pales in comparison to the original Unreal. I am convinced that this game was delayed for about 6 months, because of all the flaws in the game. They tried to improve it, but failed.

But the game is not beyond redemption, it does have it's moments. So I would wait until the game drops to the 20 Euro, USD, etc. I'm sure by then it will have a decent patch that will allow you to play the game. ;)

Spend your money on UT2003 instead. This is what Unreal 2 should have been!

Thanks for the heads-up, Strahlen. I just got some extra pay for a job I did Saturday and had contemplated blowing a portion of it on Unreal II -- at the Games shop on Grafton St.!

LOL

It's good to know there's someone else on this board who's in Dublin. Cheers!

@ dxkim - I love Unreal Tournament 2003, got it day 1 (legit), again, close to sixty euro, this includes 25% Irish government tax.. I have fog table issues with my ATI card, lol, do any games run as smotthly as my dear old Quake III.. ;)

Unreal II - I managed to get one mission started by modifying one of the .bat files in the system folder.. I HATED the 1st person physics.. a player? more like a coffee table with a gun attached to the corner, though I liked the Appleseed Manga look of the body armour.. Did anyone say.. Halo.. felt like it, even the graphics, the default gun is the split image of one in Halo..

@ catachresis - I'm a digital dirt bird.. contact me if yer find cheap Ritek or Bulqpaq.. within easy reach..

On another note, a lot of shops in Ireland refuse to give cash back on PC games, they were breaking the law for months, regardless of the nature of the goods, CASH HAS TO BE OFFERED BACK TO THE CUSTOMER, in keeping with recent european law..
