typical newbie question

Hi,

I recently just got on to divx , mpg, and all that stuff; i have little tidbits of facts about different unrelated things, but i have yet to peace them together to make sense yet; so here they are:

I downloaded a bunch of avi clips (as well as mpg clips) ; eventually i'd like to burn them as vcd so that i can view them on the vcd/dvd player; i needed t make room on my hd so i have only burned them to cd'rs as data so far; eventually i'd like to convert all the avi to mpg because mpg's are smoother to ff and rewind, plus i know it has to be mpg format before it gets burned to vcd.

1/ is it better to join the little avis together first and then convert to mpg or better the other way or no difference? ( i have mpg joiner, pecks power join, and tmpgenc to do the job); so far so good.....

2/ i know avi's are more compressed than mpg's so wheni convert to mpg, i should expect the file to be much bigger after conversion, but sometimes the resultant mpg is about the same size or sometimes even smaller!!!!?????!!!! i have alwys used the same settings all the time, so does this mean that there r diff. types of avi's? or am i going nuts??

3/ couple of times i convert the avis to mpgwith tmpgenc and the mpg file comes out with no sound????

4/ with having the mpg format as the ultimate desired format for me, i have a bunch of avis and mpgs that are way over 700 mB, so i need to cut them first; should i cut the avi's first before i convert? and which is the best prog to use for that?;i tried using avichop but when i loaded the file, it says the file is not avi; it's like , uh, yes it is an avi format.

5/ an unrelated question :) i'd like to print the nfo files out to paper but the ascii art is all garbled; is there a way to print them and have them look as good as through the nfo reader? btw, i love the "damn nfo viewer"; real nice!

i know this is a lot of questions; whichever someone can help me out, i'd really appreciate that!! :)

Take care.

I'll attempt to answer your questions.

Q1 Convert each AVI to mpeg and then cut & join with TMPGEnc. Thats the best and safest way.

Q2 AVI can be made with just about any data rate and sound source. Yep I to have found the off AVI where the mpg is also not much biger than the AVI. Well done AVI's are big. Crap AVI's are very small.

Q3. Load the AVI into VirtualDUB, set Audio to Full Processing Mode, then in File, hit Save WAV. Use that wav file in TMPGEnc as Audio source.

Q4. As per Q1, chop after you make the mpg. Use TMPGEnc. See the DVD to VCD Tutorial in the Movies Tutorial section on how to do it.

Q5 Pheww at last.... Sorry I have no idea.

lol thanks a lot mr. chicken :) very speedy response; i'll try your suggestions and see how that comes out. Thanks again!!!

hey ,

thanks for such a useful tip!!! i never knew that in notepad, when u reduce the font to see the logo better, it'll print that way too; earlier when i renamed to .txt and opened, everything was huge; too bad there's no print preview feature tho.

hmm, i have done that but i thought not all characters, specifically ascii art/codes dont transfer over to word but they do ok on notepad
