Trouble with Nero 6

Hi chaps,

I've just bought a Liteon 8xDual +/- RW burner, and have been trying to use Nero to burn, specifically NeroVision Express 2, which I liked the look of because of the easy menu-creation system. However, if I try and burn a film size file, from MPEG-3, even though the file size is never above 4.0gb, after about two hours of transcoding it decides that there is 'Insufficient Disk Space'. This is patently not true on a 4.7gb disc of decent quality. I've even tried copying in LongPlay at a reduced rate, still no dice. Tiny files will burn fine, eveything works peachy, but nothing of a decent heft.

So is Nero playing me around? Or have I missed something? Should I be shrinking the files with DVDShrink? Why, if they are much smaller than 4.7?

Any help appreciated, before the Liteon goes in the bin...

You know you get a new file size by transcoding?
And you know that Nero uses one of the worst MPEG encoders (quality related)?

would recommend to read our tutorials about DVD Video mastering: http://www.dvdrbase.com/forumdisplay.php?f=117

If you aren't using NTFS, it won't be able to create a file larger than 4Gb - you really need to be using WinXP (or 2000) with NTFS filesystem, to be sure of not tripping up with the kind of filesize that can occur in DVD.

NTFS shouldn't be an issue here... what's an issue is NeroVisionExpress itself, which is a joke of a program.
Use Nero to just burn, and nothing else than that.

Mmm, everybody has told me that NVE2 is a complete beetle's bonnet and a waste of time, which doesnt distress me too much, as it means there is still hope for my drive.

Sadly, I don't even know what NTFS is, I am using WinXP though, but all of my knowledge in this area doesn't add up to enough to piece together all the tutorials (which are sparkling, btw, well done).

Other Nero programs refuse to acknowledge the existence of files since they are .avi (I assume) Can I convert them independently of the burn process to MPEG2?
