yeah i had the same prob with tmpgenc i found out i had the wrong codecs installed try sld codec pack i find it has everything u need

i would strongly advise against ANY CODECS PACKS as they often cause more headaches than they are worth by overwriting codecs that are already working or installing codecs that are simply not needed :(

You would be better downloading GSPOT and use it to check what the codecs are used in the AVI then only download and install those for a better chance of decoding or using the file :)

A great Tutorial by the chookieman;)

Trying to convert an AVI to anything and the process crashes (but sucessfully run before) is a big indication that the AVI has problems. This is VERY common unfortunately. Check the avi with DivFix and DivXRepair or even VirtualDUB's scan for brocken frames.

Also, as said above, I would strongly advise NOT to install any Codec pack, they have killed more systems than they have ever helped. All you need to decode Divx avi's is DivX 5.x & the latest XVID codec. URL's for d/l of these can be found in the Tutorial The Poacher gave.
