Toshiba Laptop

Hi all, a mate has a toshiba laptop that he bought over in the U.S. and has blown the mother board up in it and wants $100 for it and has been told he must take it to an authorised Toshiba dealer to get it fixed for about $800. Just woundering if it is worth it or is there a cheaper way around this...not sure of model or specs yet, but its at least 2 years old..
Any advice would be great :)

Cheers

A good electronic engineer could look at it, since many a time it could B something simply to fix and not as you say the mobo blow up...:) Theres always a market for laptop parts and at $100 sounds good. But like you've said you don't know the spec :(

Hey Smelly Fish, There is a cheaper way around it but it will cost you more in headaches instead. My monitor went on my toshiba laptop last summer. The authorised dealer wanted $1000. I shopped around the net and found all the individual parts at a discount. I even found a website that showed me how to fully install it. The problem was when I totalled up the final numbers including shipping I was still paying $800 and I wouldn't even have it installed yet. No warranty either. I finally just let the dealer do it. In 2 days I had my laptop back. The problem is that each individual part down to the last screw has a part number. Plus on yours you don't really know if it's the mobo at all. So you would have to troubleshoot it first. If your willing to spend $900 on a 2 year old laptop just save a few more dollars and buy a new one.

Hi all, thank you very much on your input and comments i really appreciate it as i really didnt know what to do. So i have decided to try to get some more information about the laptop first, than may call up a few P.C. shops and do the maths on how much its going to cost me. I am not too keen like Blane said to do it myself as most of the time when i attempt to do things like that i end up ripping my hair out and taking it to a P.C. shop (but learn heaps in the process).

Thanks once again and may request some more advice soon :)

Cheers
