"Dual layer discs will require new hardware entirely.

The PX-708A was the first 8x DVD+R recorder on the market. At that time, 8x DVD-R media was not even close to being specified or produced. The hardware in the PX-708A can't be changed with a simple firmware update to support 8x DVD-R media when it eventually ships.

Plextor has chosen to devote development efforts into new products instead of making a mediocre attempt at supporting something that the drive was never designed to do. So there won't be any way to update the drive with a firmware change to support 8x DVD-R media.

Instead, watch for our new products that will be announced shortly at <!-- m -->http://www.plextor.com<!-- m --> I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!"



Looks like they already want me to replace a burner I got about a month ago. It is a great burner, sony disks play in everythng I try. "

I'm glad optorite doesn't have that Attitude.
Well just pay too much to begin with and just keep paying too much and go on to the next!!! Well thats just my opintion but when friends ask me why I don't buy or recommend plextor products thats what I tell them!!!

Unfortunately they costa de bomb & as U have discovered the technology moves on >< better off buying cheapo (as long as it performs) cos sure as eggs is eggs its out of date as soon as its out of the box.

i cant grumble with PLEXTOR they held true to their 2 yr warrenty for me and replaced my 24/10/40a free of charge and picked up and returned the new drive FREE of charge

but like poacher said technology goes in leaps and bounds recently what you buy today is already outdated tomorrow

there are no current burners that will be able to burn dual-layered dvds with a simple firmware flash. everyone was hoping the A06 would allow this, but this was on doom9's news page recently:

German computer mag c't recently reported in their print editing that the dual layer DVD-R burner shown at CES was in fact not an A06 with only a firmware upgrade, but that the hardware was modified as well. And Pioneer said that neither the A06 nor A07 could be upgraded to dual layer burning capabilities and that only the A09, due for Christmas 2004 would add dual layer DVD-R support, at 1x speed. In the meantime, there will be an A08 burner that burns DVD-Rs at 12x or 16x (the specs are not yet known), since the A09 will handle single layer DVD-Rs at 16x speed.

u shouldn't buy products in anticipation of them being able to do more in the future than advertised anyway.

AFAI Reckon U gonna need 2 different coloured lasers to burn to 2 layers at the same time so upgrading present burners would seem impossible

I wouldn´t blame on Plextor, they offer the best drive at the time and their products always do what they´re supposed to do so blaming them for not supporting something that wasn´t in the market at the time the drive came out doesn´t seem fair, it is obviuous that if they could provide a firmware that aloud to deal with new standars then that would be a great plus for the unit but by the time in my opinion they make the best drives around and when you can´t afford them (or just don´t want to pay the extra) then we always turn for the best inmediate option: Pioneer in my case wich by the way won´t support 8x dvd-r or dual layer.

I'm not talking about dual layer. If anyone thought they would get a dual layer drive with out buying a new drive I have bridge to sell you. I just think is seems funny that the plextor drive will not do 8x on - media when other drive that cost almost half the price (comparing price when drive first came out) will be able to do that with a firmware update. I think that people believe just because they pay more they get more when obviously that not the case. I guess I'm just glad that that optorite (and bet sony owner are happy too) didn't forget about my drive and just go on to the next.

I own an Ultraplex TSi 40X SCSI and a Plextor Premium...IMHO,the only Plextor drives that are worth the price difference with other drives of their catagory.....but a PX-708A certainly not.....JM2C

plextor was the very first company to put out an 8x dvd+r burner, so it's not hard to believe that their components aren't capable of 8x dvd-r burning, which is a relatively new thing.

i'll probably never buy a plextor drive simply because of the price.

Here's my tuppence worth. I own a 708a and think it's a good drive but I did email their tech support to see if they would upgrade through firmware and got a similar answer as posted. The thing I would like to see for the plex is a bit setting tool like liteon have. That to me seems like a great thing, being able to write a blank dvd+r and then change the book type to make it look like a dvd-rom. I know ppl who use this on backups and say they now do not have a problem with compatability and the rip speeds have increased for these discs. I hope someone from plextor views this and grants my wishes. There tech support said they had no plans for such a tool.
