- PoliceWare -

Please go to the following site to read about it:

Once you have read what it is, then read the proposed legislation at:
Code:
http://www.stoppoliceware.org/cbdtpa_bill_text.php
And then if you feel compelled to do so, add your comment's about this legislation at:
Code:
http://judiciary.senate.gov/special/input_form.cfm
This is something that I feel that any Administrator or member of a forum should be VERY concerned about and get on the "band-wagon" immediately about this. And might I suggest to any and all Administrator's, that if they're against this legislastion being passed that they link to that sight to be better able to help spread the word about this atrosity.

Americans have been giving up their 'rights' and 'freedoms' incrementally over the last twenty years for a little more take-home pay and a little more tax-back.

It's a phenomenon that is a by-product of the realisation in the mid-80's by middle-class Americans that their corporate bosses screw them with abandon and without recourse, so it's smarter to get behind Big Business than it is to fight it. The rapprochement with Business was celebrated in the cult of 'trickle-down' economics. Its political implications were realised with the general consensus that, while politicians could not be trusted because they claimed to be civicly-motivated, we should elect businessmen to government and run government 'like a business' because, supposedly, we understood the blatant self-interest of the business-world. Moreover, businesses were supposed to be inherently accountable to their clients and stock-holders. Thus a government-run-like-a-business would inevitably (we hoped) render its services to the electorate in an accountable way.

Ironically, the National political party that most often deplored the corruptabiliity of professional politicians also most vigorously asserted the good sense in electing political-outsiders -- who were businessmen -- and proudly exclaimed that government ought to get run like a business.

Now, America's synchronic relationship between Government and Business makes it so that advancement of the agendas of Corporations like Microsoft and associations like the RIAA is easily given the label of being in the public interest. After all, haven't we all willingly conceded our power to these guys?

If you start complaining that the American 'system' suffers from terrible inadequacies and injustices, then you're quickly dismissed as a political extremist. Politics is just a sham justification for self-interest after-all. By contrast, the 'Industry Leaders' and their supporters are Patriots, selflessly fighting to keep America Number 1 (whatever the hell that means).

Oh, and if you feel like somebody's trampling on your inherent rights, don't bother taking the complaint to City Hall -- there's nobody there who believes in the legitimacy of the political process any more. They're all businessmen. Call your lawyer instead: that's what any business would do.

catachresis, I agree with you bud. But let's make this clear, it's both of the major political parties that are corrupt. Sadly it's all this PAC money that is corrupting us. Greasing the wheels of policy and speech. Big corporations like M$, the Film Industry, and the RIAA are big donators to BOTH political parties. It makes me laugh that the self proclaimed "party of the people" is one of the biggest takers of money from the RIAA and "Hollywood."

Sadly, this is not a US only phenomenon. There are many multi-national corporations world wide that are usurping our rights in the name of piracy and security. In fact, of the 5 major music labels represented world wideby the RIAA, only one of them is American owned. Sony/CBS (Japan), TimeWarner (USA), BMG (German), EMI (UK). Vivendi/Universal [now owns all of Polygram] (French).

The dystopian concept (feared in books, movies, etc.) that this world will be run by one big multinational corporation, seems to become a reality more and more each day!

It's all so pathetic!

Admittedly, dxkim, the Democratic party is very nearly as full-of-it as the other, though it is not so overtly an advocate of big business (being -- as it has been put in the past -- the party of 'big guvment'). That said, I believe that Slick Willy Clinton and his Hollywood centrists brought the party much closer to the business-centric model.

PAC money is indeed a crucial problem. Ask your local representative whether he/she believes that unlimited advertising and campaign contributions are guaranteed by the First Amendment as constituents of his 'freedom of expression'.

Last, I just want to aver that it's not 'politics' that is corrupt but a belief that all politics must be -- can only be -- an expression of somebody's individual self interest and that all collective political association can only occur because of the concurrence of self-interests.

The Founding Fathers did indeed rebel from the Colonial Empire in order to pursue apparent commercial interests. Signficantly, however, they did all believe that they acted upon other motives as well that exceeded the importance of simple self-interest.

It is for some cases like this one that I feel lucky not being an US citizen. But this would concern everyone sooner or later, as according to the laws of the open market when an american sneezes, a german gets pneumonia.
