The speed limit for CD's (bulletproof vest required)

NB. They are equating CLV speeds , so a CAV 52x which only delivers 52x at the outer edge, actually rotates at 37% of that speed, and delivers a consequently lower throughput at the start.

It IS, however, possible to explode a cracked CD in a drive at 52x CAV speed.

@LTR12101B this has been discussed in many forums the case of the exploding cd !?

some cases even stated that they had cds explode with such violence that they have blown the cd drive front off and in some cases EVEN cut the users leg with the explosion    !?

I ALWAYS bin any cds that appear defective even if its a minute almost impossible to see stress mark or flaw that seems dubious! (especially near the center ring of the disk) then they are disposed of as its not worth the risk of it exploding on spinning up in my drives :)

cheaper to use another blank disk then replace a drive or suffer the effects of high velocity shards of plastic :)

That article is a rather different take on it - at speeds of up to 28000 rpm, every CD is an exploding one - the damage to their equipment's shrapnel shield (and the ceiling from earlier tests!) has to be seen to be believed!
