I would be interesting on what other programs you have tested and why you eliminated/rejected them.

Have you ever tried Cinema Craft Encoder or Canopus Procoder ?

Yes A retail dvd player that can play divx!
Wow what about the other 99.99999999999999999% who dont have one?

Havent seen the divx dvdplayer in action but I would bet it cant play half of the divx movies downloaded from the net.

DVD2SVCD using CCE is an excellent way of encoding your back up movies to play on standalones.

Divx may one day make SVCD obsolete.
That day has not come yet.

The best way to backup DVD.....................DVD-R! ;)

you are correct daveml!
These new DivX players that are coming out (none really out for sale yet... just prototypes) are made for DivX 4.12 & 5.x support.
Not the 3.x made DivX's out there... which are about 75%+.

For myself I don't mind just watching DivX off the computer or pluging out to TV, but not everyone has TV in room or wants to watch like that.

DVD+R are just the same as DVD-R only that DVD-R are more compatible with other components and DV-R discs are cheaper too. But if your player plays them and you don't mind shelling out the extra money for the DV+R discs than no problemo.
In time am sure things will level off more and hopefully be dirt cheap too.

thx 4 your reply daveml but not so long ago 99.999999999999% of us wern`t on the internet. iwill by 1 of these players when they become available. ps i would only use it to play my legally owned divx backups & not 4 pirated movies downloaded of the internt. lol.

i like divx and svcd. i prefer divx but as no real standards have been derived and i only just got around to buying my first dvd/mpg external player for the tv i won't be getting any divx dvd players soon. i have to use the tvout which is pretty good quality but not as fantastic looking as a decent svcd. plus i have to always get up and plug the damn cables in (already broken my scart adapter from the constant pulling and pushing).

if i really like a film that i want to keep but won't buy then i use SVCD, however for collecting movies divx is more then adequate for a film i will only watch once. and i refuse to buy dvds of films i already own on video. after all if it's the license to view i am paying for then i think that's fair.
