system wont shut down

my father inlaws system wont shut down, its running 98 se on a pntium class processor. it starts to shut down and gets as far as the blue screen that says windows is shutting down then stops..
the hard drive light doesnt come up or an error message... p;lease help

I had that problem with 98SE and Me. The ACPI power may need to be enabled or disabled both in BIOS and in Windows; the patch Viper linked to works usually, but not always. Depends on how well power management is implemented on the motherboard.

Another note here is that ive also read that sometimes the windows shutdown wav can get corrupted and cause bad shutdowns! :( so if it can be lived without remove it from the windows \ control panel \ sounds settings scroll through the list of wavs until you locate the shutdown wav and disable it :)
