SYSTEM RESOUCES decreasing...can I avoid/reduce this problem?

I agree...when you have 256MB or more, it's kind of useless to have a RAM releaser...I tried RAMIdle on a system with 384MB of RAM...well, anyway I discovered I had always at least 50MB free, even without RAMIdle...That's good.

The problem is SYSTEM RESOURCES...they tend to decrease more and more as I work with my PC...however much free RAM I might have.
I launch Win98 RSRCMTR.EXE and it soon goes to 30, 20% of system resources left (the GDI ones are higher)
And sometimes I get the Win message "over 90% sys res busy to exec the program, shut down some other running prog and try again" (or the like, that's my translation)

My RAM is ok, tested many times...Seen also all processes running with sw like "Process Viewer": nothing seems to be strange...

Any tip about why that happens?
Any other about how to solve/reduce the problem?

ok, so...no solution? I knew and understood that Win9x has not that good resource managing...

is there any "resource optimizer" out there, that you know of?

@crom

well it all depends on what software you are using. Plus the fact that most windows o/s have crappy memory optimisation.

i mean 384 ram is more than enough for win98, what on earth are you doing to only leave 50 mb ram left ?

I suggest you kill off any unnecessary progs, and dont run so many at a time. Ram optimisers - well its a good idea, but in practice can cause problems. I suggest you use RAM Idle but remove the auto memory freeing feature. and just release memory on demand via the tray icon.

Changing to xp and continuing your current practice of software usage, i dont expect youd get much performance improvements, prob worst than before considering xp is big time memory hungry.

Hi guys!
I find myself having 50MB of RAM left only if I'm doing some rendering with Photoshop, burning a CD, surfing the web with 20 pages open and dowloading at full-band! :D

@Shadey: I like to think I'm quite an expert about how to manage and tweak Win98. I have very few appz starting with the OS (the biggest is the firewall, ZA, which I'm going to uninstall..I'll try Seagate's one, as many on this forum did )

On a 2nd HDD I have WinXP Pro, and, besides running lots of useless services automatically, it's very slow compared to the well known'n'tricked Win98SE...

I just wondered about a sw, an add-on or the like, out there, which could improve the bloody resource managing of Win98 that, we know, has little to share with free RAM left.

I found this, it is not for 98 but you mentioned having the sluggish XP as well.

I am not that confident so I only tweek the ones that I know about, but the few I have changed have made a difference.

If you are expert with XP as well you won't need it, but others may find it interesting.

I see, well in that case, an experienced user like yourself :) would also know that opening so many browser windows will deplete your memory reserves.

There was a thread earlier on about ZA Pro 3 and Sygate, and something about memory usage. There was a third one mentioned - i forgot what it was - i'll stick a link when i find it. Thought the third one uses much less memory compared to the others discussed.

WinXP does have a lot of services running by default. The good thing is it is ALL tweakable in WinXP. Most of these services wont be useful for general home users (if they were using the pro version). Yes WinXP seems slow - once you tweaked it the way you want - it is all good.

The only practical suggestion i have for a power user like yourself is go buy some more memory, but memory prices currently have been rising, unless you're desparate for memory i'll wait and hope the prices drop soon.
