System keeps hanging

Hi people

I have just installed a new hdd seagate 60 gig 7200 rpm which went in without too many probs.
But my system now keeps hanging. about 2 mins after it boots up.
I disconnected it and my sys seems to run ok.
also when i try and d/load picture from my digi camera via USB it hangs too.

I have a 300 watt psu.
1.6+ ghz amd cpu
another 20gig maxtor hdd
dvd drive liteon cdrw

I noticed though that the case was very warm when the 60 gig drive was in, but the fan was spinning

what fan ? case fan ?
what do u have ? - a midi tower ? how many fans ?

are u saying - that it nearly always hang after 2 mins (give or take several seconds) ?
so if u boot up and left it in DOS for 2 mins - does it hang ?

if thats the case - it might be over heating - but - i wouldnt expect a 60 gig 7200 rpm drive to over heat in such a short period of use ?

i suggest u monitor the mobo temperature with and without the hard disk running - could be inside case temp affecting mobo temp.

if it is high inside case temp - i suggest a few extra fans - placed in good locations to improve air flow.

I am running xp
the case is well ventilated and nowhere near a rad.
we have another system next to this one which is running fine.
After i unplugged the 60 gig drive it cooled down
I am now running a case fan, but wasnt when the 60 gig drive was installed as i didnt have enought power connectors.
in the hdd caddy there is facility for 3 drives, all these are filled, could 3 drives piled on top of eachh other cause a ventilation problem?

I dont know what the temp of the cpu was when the case was warm, but it isnt warm now, i'll check when i now boot up

Thanks for your time
It's appreciated

jumpers

is the new 60 gig a secondary drive ? if you just left the jumpers as they were in the box when you bought the drive it will still boot if it`s on a secondary drive but you can have problems what is youre configuration? never use cable select setting either

Thanks for your time danoman

i set it as primary master.
like i said windows boots up no probs and i can see the 60gig drive. maybe there are too many devices in the case and it is getting too hot

si

okay

you put the drive in and it hangs is the new drive youre boot drive or secondary you said you unplugged it and it ran fine so i assume its not youre boot drive if its not youre boot drive then youre jumpers should be set at secondary master or primary slave depending on youre cable setup

It doesn't look like too little power. You can have up to six hard drives and/or CDROM/Writers of wich in the newer motherboards 2 are RAID drives (normally 4 and you can add IDE or SCSI cards for more drives)

Personally I think it is a problem with the new drive. If you put it in another system does it do the same thing? If it does then I would advice you to take it back for another one. If you manage to use it as Slave, in more or less a couple of months I believe it will be dead.

Cheers,
