System does not like AVIs

A couple of days ago my system stopped playing AVI files correctly, both Divx and Xvid. I am unable to get any video using WinMP, WinDVD, PowerDVD, Zoom Player and several others. I do get sound after a 5 to 15 second wait, but no video. VLC is able to play the files fine. VirtualDub and TMPGEnc are able to display the video. MPG files are not effected.

I have un-installed and reinstalled my Divx and Xvid codecs with no change. I used system restore and went back to when they did work, but still the problem persisted.

I assume this is a codec issue, but am unsure where to go from here. Any suggestions appreciated.

Install GSpot,it tells you what codec is missing....
Should have mentioned, GSpot reports all codecs needed are already installed and that the files render without error. Thanks though.

Probably 1 of our movie experts has a better answer, but after re-reading your post,it looks to me that this can be a software conflict.....you have a lot of movie players installed on your system, perhaps they are messing up....check tools-->folder options-->File types to find out wich program is associated with AVI files and replace it by another 1....

Yeah, I do run a lot of crap. usually get away with it, but when I don't it makes it difficult to find the problem. Right now AVI is associated with WinMP which is my preference, but will try some other associations and see if it has any effect. Thank you again for your response.

seems zat ur codecs may have been messed up....err think u're gonna have 2 clean all codecs & all registry manually...i once had a similar prob but i've formatted my xp partition completely & reinstalled everything...a bit 2 extreme ...try installing sdl codec pack from _http://www.skynet4ever.tk

Looks like it was something with ffdshow. Installed the latest Alpha and it corrected the issue. Now let's see what new problems the Alpha brings. ;)
