I was reading your tutorial on how to backup your DVD's to VCD and I was curious as to what a movie adaptor is for PSX? Can I buy this at my local electronics store like Radio Shack or Rex? Also, I've burned over 50 movies SVCD and they work fine on my DVD player, but when I tried to play them on my friends DVD player, they would'nt play? By chance do I need to burn SVCD to cdrw, rather than cd-r? What format is most "compatable" for stand alone DVD players. SVCD, or VCD?

The movie adapter for psx is a plug in adapter for the early psx models.
Later models do not have the port and so cannot use the adapter or the actionreplay cartridge.
U can still find them but they are getting rare.
You have a much better chance of vcds working in a standalone than svcd.
Even some players that say they play svcd only do so jerkily or have problems with different bitrates.
You can try different media (cdrw is always worth a go).
Most people trade in vcd as it saves a lot of compatability issue problems even though quality is a little less.
Some players will not even play vcd.
Always try before u buy.

dave,
So this movie adaptor is made direcly by Sony and was packaged with the PS2 early edition models? Do you recommend going VCD via ChickenMans tutorial? (TMPGEnc& DVD2AVI)?

The movie adapter was a third party cartridge for the PSX (1)
The new psx 1 and the last build before i was made in its compact mode do not have the slot so cant use it. As far as I know there is no way (yet) for the ps2 to play vcd.
I can highly recommend the Chickenman tmpgenc/dvd2avi method as the results are near svcd quality.
Just use the highest setting (very high).
I have started to do both svcd (dvd2svcd) and vcd(tmpgenc) conversions.
Svcd for me and a few mates and vcd for general trading.

dave,
So you're talking about the PSX 1 model, and not PS2? I own an old PSX1 model, but have no clue where to get a movie adaptor. So a VCD will actually play on a PSX 1 model with movie adaptor, and not PS2?

P.S I just wanna make sure I understand you m8 :D

Yep thats right.
The old psx with the big socket in the back.
The later psx1models had this socket removed as u could play cdr games with a certain other cartridge.
PS2 is a no no for now!

dave,
Thanks for your speedy response m8 :D One last question. In your opinion, what format produces the best videeo quality
SVCD or VCD?
What format is most "compliant" with stand alone DVD players
SVCD or VCD?

Shoebedobedoo:cool:

1. if u use dvd2svcd tutorial by chickenman the results are better than the vcd tmpgenc method.
2. Both methods produce equally compliant mpgs.
If u mean compatible then vcd is a more compatible format than svcd.(more dvd players will play vcd than
will play svcd).

man, and I thought you were an expert Shoeb   lol.
As Daveml said, SVCD is better quality than VCD (everyone I think knows this *just look at bitrates and sizes and all of that), but VCDs can be very nice quality also. Many people I know can barely tell the difference from it to DVDs (lol, strange but true), however SVCDs are very close to DVDs.
Typically this is the scale on quality (compared to DVD):
DVD=100%, SVCD=93%, VCD=85%, VHS=78%, DivX=50-96%(as many people aren't very good at them *guess same applies to others).
Figures are a rough estimate (can be lower or higher) but basically how the naked eye percieves things (not talking about technical side of things).

Standalone DVD players are not all made to play these standards and many give jerky quality for either or both VCD/SVCD. So you must choose wisely (that's why elpresidente started a thread on DVD players that play these things).

At the moment PS2 machines can only play DVDs. PSX 1 VCDs with adaptor, but the price of the adaptor is about the same price of a standalone VCD/SVCD player ($40USD) in many places (UK/Asia) so not worth it if you ask me.

1. I havent released my Tut for VCD using DVD2SVCD yet as the beta version 1.1.0 of DVD2SVCD hasnt been released yet. I will as soon as its released.

2. By far the most compliant form is VCD for DVD playback. I would estimate 90% of DVD players can playback a standard VCD while only 70% can playback a SVCD without any problems.

@CM
I was comparing the svcd produced by dvd2svcd and the vcd produced by tmpgenc!lol!
Obviously (or not) the svcd is better than the vcd, especially if 3pass or above is selected.
Sorry for the confusion.

to put it bluntly the vcd player cartridge for psx 1 is a load of crap the psx just does not have the kick to play them without going blocky and jumping and glitching i have seen one and used one 1st hand and honestly there not worth the hassle !!!

a second hand PHILLIPS CDI game system can be bought for next to nothing and they play vcds perfectly !

The processing power of a psx is crap for vcds compared to the dreamcast vcd player as the dreamcast has a far superior processor compared to the psx and also its windows CE powered so the player is based around a windows vcd playpack routine plus the dreamcast has more on board ram to cope with the vcds and a faster lazer to read the data with more speeds than just the 2 speeds of a playstation lazer unit !

also the dreamcast can handle DIVX too and the playback on that is good quality its the closest thing other than pc for a standalone DIVX player for the time being until the manufacture of home DIVX players are released! (sometime next year prolly according to sources ;) )
