SVCD to DVD which bitrate??

Hi guys...as my oldy pioneer can't play SVCD's so i have to reencode to DVD Mpeg2 and reauthor! Anyway if i use something like tmpegenc or procoder what settings should i use to maintain the same quality? the normal bitrate of the svcd is about 1.5-2.5....if i encode say in 2 pass vbr what should the avg. bitrate be and what should the max bitrate be? if the quality stays the same the added bonus is i could probably get a bit more footage on to the disc. thanks guys!

p.s i would have also followed chickenmans advice on renaming the mpeg files to vobs and using dvd2svcd with CCE but i am currently having problems with the VFAPI codec screen hanging when using dvd2svcd with CCE 2.66.

Have you tried the "header trick"
http://www.geocities.com/evbq64a/vcdtrick.htm

It supposedly allow you to play SVCD format content on a DVD that only accepots VCD - basically cons it that it's a VCD, and so long as it actoully devodes MPEG2 under those conditions......

It's not CERTAIN, but it's a far quicker option than re-encoding if you can get away with it.

Dvd lab wil also let you put svcds onto dvdr without any need for encoding it will change the audio from 44 to 48 as well.Have you tried cce 2.5 as its more stable than 2.66

thxs guys...i tried the header trick with dvdlab before but it didn't work! ....so re-encoding is the only option...as to CCE 2.5 i had it on my XP system and it kept on crashing/hanging either in .vaf or encoding mode....so i gave up and used 2.67...which worked fine for quite a while but now suddenly have been getting the VFAPI problem (have removed/reinstalled all the software and codec but nothing!) ...might just do a fresh XP install in a spare HDD i have.

I find CCE 2.50 plays up real bad if your memory is running in Dual Mode, while cce 2.67.01.07 works fine. A few people with the ASUS A7N8X m/bs have found this problem, including me :(

But you should be using eclCCE instead of VFAPI if your using cce vers other than 2.50. Have a read of my DVD to DVDR Tute on how to set DVD2SVCD up using eclCCE. Its also substantially quicker in converting that way than with VFAPI.

Thanks CM! as you know i have the same ASUS and 2600 CPU as you if remember correctly....in the Encoder tab where CCE location is placed i put the location of eclCCE (which is in the same folder as CCE..currently i have version 2.67.00.10 installed.)..if i don't tick the safe/framserving box then when i run the prog only a few frames are encoded and then it hangs. If i tick the safe/framserving box the DVD2SVCD as default has the VFAPI codec located...which when i encode hangs at the VFAPI screen  ...thing is i tried it on a fresh install of XP (on a spare HDD) and installed the above CCE with eclCCE plus default settings as set out in the tutorials...and the same thing happened with Vfapi....i tried using version 1.05 as well but that did the same.....funny (well not that funny  ) thing is i've had it all working before..i backed up some of my dvd's and converted some donwloaded avi's too....
