suggestions on makin a forum

hi folks, err need some help on this....
i'm trying 2 choose either to make a forum for uni students,or simply use a mail list...2 make a forum ,i'm thinking of using something like phpbbb, but errr it's not really my domain...so any suggestions?
i'm more tempted using a mail list ,signing 4 a yahoo gp something like that instead of setting a small forum for course module discussion, which seems 2 be easier....

that depends what ur class m8s want
personally, i think mailing list wud hav more success than forum
If u wanna go ahead for forum, u'll need to find a host
For forum s/w i recommend invisionboard, tis better than phpbb

If you don't mind the ads, or paying to remove them - http://www.ezboard.com/ - there are others around eg. Bravenet - http://www.bravenet.com/webtools/forum/index.php

To run forum software yourself, you need more than just "ordinary" webspace, though I assume you have a machine to run it on "in house".

http://forum.snitz.com/ - Snitz forums - FREE, ASP based
System Requirements
IIS 4/IIS 5.x or PWS(Personal Web Server) on WIN95, WIN98, WIN ME, NT4, WIN2000 or WINXP, or an ASP Enabled Web Server on a Unix System (the forum has been tested on Chili!Asp), Microsoft Access 97/2000/2002 or SQL Server 6.5/7.0/2000 or MySql version 3.22 and 3.23

Not sure if it has any advantages over PHPBB though - and many would say ASP is a disadvantage.

- is this still true? - Lycos/Tripod supports PHP/MySQL ? YES, but not sure if everything required is in the free hosting?

ok ,my lecturer was thinking setting @ geocities i think
4 hosting ,err there's a slim possibility that my school could host, but i think they're running bill boy's os & stuff
personally i would prefer maillisting as i said b4...we r still in the stone age of dial up with only companies using adsl or isdn & some well off ppl
the purpose of choosing maillist/forum is 4 debugging/helping ppl thru mail ( c++ programming modules)
now got 2 get the opinion of the lecturer...
thx guys,help well appreciated ;)

If setting up the forum is not the important part of the excersize, then I'd suggest going with one of the web-boards ... and running a good ad-blocker!

I know it goes against the spirit of an ad-sposored service, but these days, they push so damn hard that there's no alternative to pushing back!

Well, this one is bizarre
http://www.globalweb.com.ru/hosting.php
For the lowest level, you need to make 50 good posts in the "contribute" area of the forum, or answering (not requesting) in the support forum.

Oops! the forum this one was in seems to be plagued by "hosting for posting" type offers, many of them either slow or NEVER delivering on the promise! - No idea if this one is good or not!

ok gonna have a look...topcities provides an interesting web hosting, but don't think i provide database support...also hear that there's a possibility to host the forum on the school's intranet, which would simply things(but i won't be a mod or admin :D)
anyway thx ltr12101b;)
