Such a newbie you want beleive it.

OK guys first things first presume I know nothing, and you can't go wrong :D

I've seen in various forums people who download movies and burn them to CD and play them on there normal DVD players or in my case play via the PC and my graphics TV Out facility, so how the hell do I go about this?
I presume I need to find the site that host these films (but I can deal with that later) do I download them as a single zip file? or do they come down in another format and do I need to convert them? If I need to convert the files or anything like that what software do I need to do this? (told you I was a newbie at this)
I know SVCD is better quality then VCD (I'm learning) but I know I have so much more to learn, we were all wet behind the ears once so please help me if you can. Thanks

if you are looking for something to convert those files they download on the forums there is TMPGenc and CCE SP. usually the movie file they download is an avi compressed with DivX. in DivX, a whole movie can be compressed to 600-700 mb. if you want to burn the file you'll need one of the two programs above. convert it to VCD/SVCD NTSC/PAL. re-encoding the avi file could take about a day depending on your computer. by then you should have the two CDs to write the movie to. you should cut the MPG file in half to fit it in the two CDs. you can do that on TMPGEnc. remember, the quality is questionable and it takes so much time to re-encode the DivX avi to MPG. if you're really broke, i suggest you do the steps i've mentioned. otherwise, go buy the DVD or VCD.:D

hope that helps.

Hey sicknote, We were all Pingers once upon a time so don't feel bad. The first thing you have to know to get started is where to get the things that you want. In this case you want movies. Here is a site that will help guide you to all the different forms of sharing out there. I don't know who first posted this site but, I got it here and it has helped me out alot. So thanks to the person who made the first posting of this great help site.------h**p://www.slyck.com/index.html------

interesting site :) where was that when i was new to this :(

if youre using a p2p proggie, ie edonkey, direct conect etc the file format is pretty straightforward, avi.....

from irc or ftps, its normaly in 15mb rar files or a big tar file.
what you'll need for this is winrar or winace(i prefer winrar, works best imho)

also there might be a .sfv file to check that each part isnt corrupt or anything. i use this to check it, hksfv32

h==p://www.big-o-software.com/hksfv32-overviewfeatures.php

about converting etc, there are great tutorials in this forum or you can head over to w=w.vcdhelp.com

using newsgroups is another way, but i dont know anything about it :(

Most downloaded Kazza movie files, etc are low quality but can be converted, normally, to VCD. Yes SVCD is better but if the movie you have is poor quality, going to SVCD does not improve it. As the old saying goes, grabage in garbage out.

Down load the movie (MPG or AVI) and then have a read of this tutorial as it explains all in how to convert it to a VCD

Just remember not all DVD PLayers can playback a VCD as well. The brand of CDR or CDRW can also make a difference to playback on some units.

:) Thats what i am running at the moment, 1.4 T/bird athlon, 512 mb ram. If you want to shorten the length of your encode times by at least 1 hour you should decompress the audio first with something like avi 2 vcd. Then convert with tmpgenc. Using this program has shortened my encodes to typically 3 hours. I found it at w*w.vcdhelp.com.
