Stuttering playback even from HD

I'm using Nero 6 to make and burn my DVD's but they have started having a very small fraction of a second pause/stutter during playback about every second.
I can play the original files (avi, mpeg's) etc fine on PC with no stutter, but once converted they show the above problem, it's even the same if I just save the converted files to HD and play them back from there, so it's no a DVD burner/player issue.
I've even formatted machine and reinstalled Windows XP Proffessional and done all windows updates including SP2.
I also tried using Ulead DVD MovieFatcory but with the same results.
I checked the AVI files with DivFix, no errors reported.

The machine is P4, 1.8Ghz processor, 512MB Ram, onboard raid.

Can anyone shed some light on my problem

SP2 is not very stable at the moment this could have some influence on the conversion :(

this also could be a conversion problem from pal to ntsc or ntsc to pal are you trying to convert them from either to either !?

please give us more information on what processes you were trying to use to convert to dvd did you allow nero to try do the conversion from avi to DVD ??!

I am just trying to let Nero do it all including the conversion, as it appears that it should be able to do it ! It's using NeroVision Express 2, Video Options are setup as Video Mode - PAL, Aspect Ratio - Automatic, Quality - Automatic, Encoding Mode - High Quality (2 Pass VBR), Audio Format - Dolby DIgital(AC-3) 2.0.
The image stuttering also appears in the preview window within NeroVision, as I said it's very minor but I notice it !

I read about codec's in other forums, I haven't downloaded any additional codec's, do I need any ?

As you can tell I', new to this !

Thanks for your help

NERO sucks at the best of times for encoding :(

try using tmpgenc or DVD2SVCD for far better results :)

to discover what codecs an avi uses download GSPOT here and check the avi with it :)

this great tool will tell you all the codecs you need and what frame rate the avi is to determine if the avi is NTSC or PAL 23fps or 29fps for NTSC or 25fps for PAL :)
