Strange noise from Pioneer DVD ROM

Can anyone help? I have a Lite-On CDRW 40x12x48 (40125S). If I burn a VCD on to a 90 minute CDR using Overburn, when I try to play it back in my Pioneer DVD ROM DVD-106 as the CDR spins it makes a terrible noise. Is this because the disc has been overburnt and the drive can't read it properly (bearing in mind that the Lite-On has no problem with it and makes NO noise) or is it caused by something else....?

Could be a loose screw with the Pioneer drive and as it spins up to read and cache what's on the disc it vibrates in your case.
Maybe want to try tightning the screws that keep it in your case more and see if that helps.

Good luck

well Liteons have sound dampening, so even when they spin-up they're still quiet. So it's probably 1) Spinning fast, 2) Not able to read extra sectors(don't know spec of 106).

Thanks for your help you guys... i guess it's something to with the extra sectors in this case as I don't have screws holding the drive in place, the device is held in place by a locking mechanism:cool:

Some time ago I emailed Pioneer cause I had probs reading 90 and 99 min CDs with my 105 and got the official answer that they do not support CD sizes greater than 80 mins.
So the problem IMHO is the drive specifications and nothing else, although another member posted somewhere else in this forum that his 105 could read 99 min CDs

Here's the emails exchanged:

90 minute CDs are an unsupported format of CD on any of our CD or DVD
products, You may also find that the 90 minute CDs will not playback
correctly on a large number of CD audio players or CD ROM drives. We
only
recommend the use of disks upto 700MB, 80 minutes are used in any
Pioneer
product.

This is not a fault with your drive.

105SZ and 90min CD

I burned my first 90min CDs. The first one as an AudioCD Nero
reported that
I burned 89min 56,28sec) while the second was a data CD (Nero reported
790MB - 89:53,50min). Burning was @ 16x with a Plextor 16/10/40A
burner.
The Pioneer 105 SZ DVD I own refuses to read:
a) The data CD
b) the audio tracks beyond 80min

So questions arise:

1) Is it a matter of firmware? (I have flashed the original 1.33 F/W)

2) Is it a matter of defective hardware? How should this be fixed?

Thanks

@harisg - thank you so much for your post - at least I know it's not a fault with the drive. I know there is a huge difference between CD and DVD formats but it makes you wonder, if their DVD-ROMs support high density media like DVD's, why can't they make their drives 99-Min CD-R compatible too
