Strange Computer Sound issue

My computer will not play sound from real player, the sound applet in control pannel, the sound recorder, but it will play sound (from the very same files the other apps will not be successful with), with windows media player.

Thus far, I've reinstalled the sound card drivers, real player, WMP, directx9, windows 2000k sp4 (just the service pack), and deleted and reinstalled all codecs. NO LUCK!

Searches on Microsoft and Real's site yield nothing useful. I did install Nero 6 Ultra the other day. Not sure if that may have caused the issue.
Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jonathan, Welcome to our forum! :)

personally i wouldn't be worried about "not playing in Real Player", i prefer Winamp 2.9 much more for playing back WAVs and MP3s;

you didn't mentioned file typ, codec, sampling rate, bit rate; can you provide some info about, please;

also i would try to unstall Nero, because it really installs directshow filters which could cause your problem;

Well, its more than just real. None of the windows sounds etc. works. Also, for things like NPR, I really prefer real over WMP and those are the only two choices for the streamed content. The streamed content will not play sound and this is how I first noticed the problem.

As far as file types go, I really only checked against streaming media and the WAV files used by windows for sound events.

I do want to use Nero for CDRW functions, but do not need much else from it. Assuming I uninstall and then do a selective reinstall of Nero, can you tell me more about Directshow filters etc. I don't know much about them and it may help me choose how to reinstall Nero.

BTW, thanks for the help!

Tried unistalling Nero, problem persists

Hi Duracell and others,

I tried the suggestion of unistalling Nero, but the problems continue.

I'm guessing this may be related to registry changes as some software can access the soundcard while others do not seem to be able to.

Maybe Nero caused the problem/maybe not.

I'd still appreciate other suggestions!

BTW, forum search yielded no results that seemed to be related.

you can't select/deselect them while installing/uninstalling Nero; but if they are still present, they should be listed and able to uninstall in the Device Manager > Audio Codecs;

O.K., i understand, it doesn't depend on file type and codec, so it must be a general problem; Did you install a "Codec Pack" lately?

you wrote you have reinstalled soundcard drivers allready; so i don't have to recommend more then checking if the correct playback device is choosed, and no channels and no sources are muted; currently i have no more ideas; please see the pics below:

yeah, checked those things and no, I did not instal a codec set. Actually, I unistalled all multipmedia codecs and reinstalled from windows. That did not seem to help either.

Are you aware of another board which I might also post at to seek help?

Thanks again!
