start up error

i get this error message when i try to start xp

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

everything was fine till i installed a couple of programs now i get this message
saying it cannot find this file
can i fix this without having to re-install windows?

any advise would be a help thanks

repair

you can repair windows by putting in the xp cd and booting from the cd in the bios, choose to repair on the first screen and choose repair from the second screen windows xp will then repair its self and you wont lose any of the settings and programs. i cant remember if you need the product key, i dont think you do!

managed to fix the prob i ran the xp repair option then ran this command

copy C:\windows\repair\system C:\windows\system32\config\system

seems to be almost as before thanks again
