According to the dogma "simpler is better" SPTI should be preferred... but if you also use auto insert notification and/or a packet writer then ASPI should be a safer solution. Have also in mind that cdrecord pro-DVD does require ASPI to work (or at least I'm not aware of an SPTI release).
As for the best ASPI version, if you don't have SCSI LVD harddisks (where the new sensing code introduced in 4.7X is necessary) then 4.60.1019 or 4.60.1021 are the best options.

I use the latest burnatonce with DVD burning plugin and have auto-insertion enabled. Never installed any ASPI, except I do have Nero 6.
