Splitting the burning over two disks

Hello All
I have a SVCD/MPeg-2 movie on my hard drive - size of 860 mb. Is it possible to burn the file over two disks as my old and ancient cd burner dosen't support overburn and I don't have a DVDR. Mpeg format is fine as my home DVD player supports it.
Thx

Have you tried burning this as a SVCD ?! SVCD can handle mpeg2 files much larger than you think :)

or search google for an MPEG splitter there are a few out there to choose from :)

some freeware some shareware :)

Hi Viper and thx for the reply.
I'm very much out of my depth here. Is a cd capable of holding more information as SVCD? Is there a tutorial on the forum re this because I can't find one or maybe wouldn't see it if it hit me in the face!
I understand mpeg in relation to music but totally lost with this movie business.
thx

The saving from using SVCD mode (Mode 2/Form ?) with 2336 usable bytes per block instead of 2048, is about 14%.

Not good enough, as this still works out to 750 Mb - more than an 80 min - and 90 min require overburn - though I've heard mention of a 94 min that doesn't require overburn - how they managed to bend the standards that far, I don't know. Can't find 'em though - maybe it's a myth like the 120 min media that never arrived

So if I have 800mb HC Disks, I should be able to burn in Svcd format?
Can you suggest a suitable converter - have been trwling google for an hour with not much luck.

Thx all

@LTR12101B i have sucessfully on more than one occassion burnt files 830 mb + mpeg2 onto a standard 700mb 80min cd as a svcd :)

heres some more info taken from a forum on dsl reports.com

VCD - MPEG1 @ 320x240, but you have to keep the file size below the CDs limitation. 700MB CD = 700MB max file size

SVCD - MPEG2 @ 480x480. File size can exceed CDs limitation. 700MB CD = 815MB max file size

SVCD - bitrates @ min 1100, max 2500, avg 1600 - you're going to get about 60 minutes per cd.

VCD - at CBR 1150 (the standard), you can get 75-80 minutes on a CD. With the settings I listed for SVCD, you can only fit about 45 minutes on a VCD or the file size goes too high. However, if you shave a couple hundred off each of the values you can get right back up to 60 minutes and have a real nice quality (higher than VHS).
:)

now depending on bitrate etc you will or will not fit it on an 80 min cd ive made svcds that are 830mb mpeg 2 files and the picture is excellent quality :)

.... im sure chickenman and the other GURU's here in the video section can add to this :)

Apart from these "non-overburn" 94's (that I've never seen), you need a drive with overburn capability to handle anything over 80 min / 700Mb - and my old drive could only do 83:59 - which still wouldn't be enough!

Just been looking for a good freeware MPG splitter - none YET!

In a new post I asked about an extreme letterbox mode which appeared to top and tail the picture. (for some reason this was moved - don't know where).
So, if I burn the SVCD/MPeg with Nero and it reports a successful burn and the result is a very narrow picture, what's happened, hasn't it decoded it?
Thx

Actually this whole thread is better moved to the appropriate forum.Don't know what happened to your other post, unless ypu posted during the server change.

You can get a 825,000 kb file as a SVCD mpg burnt to a normal 80min CDR without any overburning at all. I have done that 100's of times in the past. the 860 meg SVCD file will fit to a 90min CDR no probs if your burner is capable of burning them (most late models are).

As for a free mpg splitter, check out bbMPEG, one of the best for VCD and SVCD. Its just a bit aukward to use thats all. First demux your MPG file to Video & Audio streams, you can use TMPGenc to do that. Run avi1mpeg2 (the main bbMPEG prog) and click the Start Encoding button. The hit Settings button. If the file is say 1000kb long and we wish to cut it in half, then for Max Size (MB) just enter 500 (thats 1/2 of 1000 :D) Then in Program Stream Settings, double click the Stream type. Dont change ony of the numbers there. Then in Input & Output tab, for Open PS enter a name you want the new file(s) to be (it add sequential numbers), for Open VS brows to your Video Stream, for Open AS ! browse to your Audio stream. Hit OK, then Hit Start. Sit back and wait for a few mins.
