Sound Problems

Hey,

I have been working on my brothers new computer for a cuple of days now. Everything has been fine and all is well except the computer dosn't think it had a sound card. Which it dose and its built in. I've looked at the motherbourd and it has an intel chip on it( not the processer chip) so i assume that its an Intel Motherbourd. I go to their site and dl the ID utility and it tells me i have the following:

Chipset
Detected Chipset: Intel(R) chipset family

Chipset Components:

Memory Controller: 82845G/GE/GL/GV

I/O Controller: 82801DB (ICH4)

Intigrated Graphics: Intel(R) 82845G graphics controller

I dunno what elts to try plz help thx

The sound chipset is enabled/disabled through the BIOS and it sounds like yours is disabled. You need to enter BIOS setup when the computer first initilizes. Usually a message like "Press Delete to enter Setup" shows up (though not always). Check the documentation that came with the system for help. Be very careful in the BIOS. Changing the wrong setting can cause a system to not boot (this can be corrected, but you may need to set a jumper on the motherboard). If you are not sure what you are doing, try to get a friend to help.

Well I went to the Bios and all that. The setting was set to auto so I just enabled it. But it still dosen't work. Also I thought I might also mention that a few things are showing up under other devices that I dont think should be there. They include:

Multimedia Audio Controller
SM Bus Controller
Universal Seril Bus (USB) Controller
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

So anymore ideas?

The Multimedia Audio controller is a good thing (sound). You didn't mention your OS, but since it didn't automatically load drivers I am assuming its not XP. Is there an "!" or a "X" next to any of the devices. The "X" means disabled and the "!" indicates its not working properly (usually a conflict). You should not have any "!" so try to resolve any conflict you may have.

If your system came with a driver disk, load the sound drivers now and hopefully it will work

SM BUS Controller is a SYSTEM MANAGEMENT BUS Device. It is used for CPU temperature or speed Controlling etc... (see this link http://www.techimo.com/forum/t78889.html). The USB controller is a good thing, leave it alone. I'm not sure why there is a VGA compatible controller, but you should probably leave it alone as well (never did like Intel or SIS graphics chip sets).

Try rerunning the chipset detector again. If the BIOS turned on the chipset it should show up now. Once you know what it is you can get drivers.

The only other thing I can think of is the obvious. Are the speakers plugged into the correct jack (I've messed up before)?

In control panel there should be a sounds section where you can change the sound effects for Windows events. If the sound card isn't working (as far as Windows is concerned) the play button will be greyed out on any selection that has a sound assigned. If its black, Windows thinks your sound card is there and working.

Hopefully someone else will join this thread. I am running out of ideas.

Good luck

Well thanks for all you efforts guy, but i went ahead and did i gigantic search on google for these certain drivers. Turns out it was a rare driver to find. I used a program called Aida32 it gave the the follow info.

Audio Controller Type: Intel 82801DB(M) ICH4
Codec Name: Avance Logic ALC202(A)
Codec ID: 414C4740h

So I have sound and everything now thx again.

Glad everything worked out. I was just going to recommend you open the case and find the exact maker and model M/B (some mfg are very difficult to identify). Still could be useful information for the future. Every manufacturer I have ever researched has a copy of the manual, BIOS updates, chipset driver updates and other stuff on-line for download.

Remember, just because it has an Intel chipset doesn't mean its an Intel M/B.
