Sort of Answer to: Please Insert Blank Disc

I don't confess to understand this. I'm not even sure I understand enough to explain the solution, but there is a program at

http://www.dvdplusrw.org/Article.asp?mid=-1&sid=-2&aid=77&hl=411s

that will set a bit on a blank disk. Setting the bit to DVD-ROM for +R (which is what I have) and DVD+RW for DVD+RW allows EVERY piece of software I have been having problems with, to recognize the blank disc correctly and burn to it.

I am sure some update to the software somewhere would have made this unneccessary, but I didn't find it, and I've been trying for days. I'm not sure this is a good solution or the best solution, but I hope this helps anyone else with this issue.

Just to review actions taken before this, I updated EVERY burning software I have, updated all firmware, removed potential conflicting programs, tried different master/slave configurations, don't have ivariant drivers or motherboard, could view DVD, could view and burn CD, etc etc and nothing would recognize a blank DVD+R.

Me and my home videos thank everyone for their feedback.

Book Type Bitsetting ?

@ TomMcCrossin,

The procedure you are referring to is "Book Type Bitsetting".

Not all DVD burners support "Book Type Bitsetting" and the DVD burners that do recognize "Book Type Bitsetting" needs the proper DVD burner firmware installed.

"Book Type Bitsetting" is a new feature and not all burning software programs recognize this new feature.

Perchance why do you need to use "Book Type Bitsetting"? Unless you have a very old stand alone desktop DVD player that does not recognize a DVD+R or DVD+RW there is no reason to use "Book Type Bitsetting".

Coaster

Thanks. I actually had already upgraded the firmware for the 411s to J, and tried (to the best of my knowledge) everything on the faq you referenced, other tips from other messages, and several other sites faqs. but....

I think I finally have it. You guys probably understand better than I, but I reinstalled PowerDVD that came with the drive as the very last thing (which no doubt put back something that got overwritten) and it all works fine now. Without setting bits. Thanks for your help and this great site.
