Sony or Pioneer?

Hi everyone just looking for some feedback on this topic which has probably been covered before sorry if that is the case.

About to purchase a DVD burner, I've narrowed it down to the
Sony DRU510A or the Pioneer DVR-106.
Here in Australia I can get oem versions of
the Sony for $AU440 and the Pioneer for $AU360.

the Pioneer as you know has slower RW speed but I'm not to worried about that.
I seem to think though the Sony has a few problems just by reading posts in various forums. Am I correct in saying this, I don't know?? A lot of people are happy with their Sony but quite a few people aren't also. Haven't read as much bad press about the 106.

I have a friend at work who just bought the Sony external model 4 weeks ago and it is already sent away to be repaired, the drive tray mechanism jammed up and this has sort of put me off the sony a bit and has driven me towards the 106, not only just for the $80 price difference.

I just would like to know everyones feelings on which one I should go for? Anyone had any bad experiences with the 106? Is the 106 compatiable with all well known software ie dvdxcopy express, nero etc.

Welcome to the forum!I would just go for the one with the best price.Both are the best in class.I have also seen more problems with the Sony,but probably because more of those were sold.Pioneer has only just released this(their first)dual format writer.Oh..Sony has a better cdrw writer built in(24X,versus 16X for the Pioneer).

so cdrw is not an issue for me as I will be keeping the liteon.

Pioneer dvd-R/RW Recorder A06

I went for the A06, updated the firmware straight away to the 1.06,get from pioneer site.
Had burner for 2 weeks, backed up 5 Dvd's with nero 6.0.0.11. so far, with no problems.
Plays in my Palsonic dvd player 7500 with no problems also.
Very happy with the Ao6.
Took 27min to burn a 4.7g DVD.
I live Gold coast..

I have been using a Sony DRU500A I got this last Christmas with the latest firmware upgrade, and have had absolutely no problems! My only advice is to make sure you get good blank media to burn to. I have been using Ritek 4x Certified with very good results.

Hey,
Like Nighthunter, just got my P106 (a06), upgraded flawlessly to rev1.06 and armed with x4 discs, I enjoy a 13min burn for 1 DVD-R. Also tried successfully (many times) the DVD-RW (25min).
Both work on my two stand-alones (Pioneer 533 and 80$ local brand).

My friend, however ,has the Sony, and after two months he still produces joyful sounds, so...

not too decisive here, but maybe that's your answer - if they're both ok - why spend more :)

I have just got my Pioneer DVR-106 must nice bit of hard ware Hmmmmm niceeeeeee :D

I'm not much bothard about the cdrw writer built in at all on the DVR-106 as i have a Lite-On 52x24x52, Think I would use it as a back up if any think went wrong with my Lite-On

I have burned a few DVD now and i have had no problems at wirting on both formats...

picked up the OEM Pioneer DVR-106 for £128 so i'm happy for what I spent on it

Ok thanks everyone. Have made up my mind will be getting the Pioneer. I really appreciate the honest responces from all that replied to this thread and I had gathered enough information from the posts.

Have in mind that the Sony can read+ write RAW and does correct EFM, so it can manage most CD copyprotections, unlike the Pioneer.

Yes I would say on Balance if The DVD burner is gonna be your only burner get the Sony BUT if U have a CD burner capable of above (per scarecrow) then the Pioneer will be better value
