Sony Mini DV Capture problems

I'm having trouble installing my camera on my laptop. I'm using XP pro and just updated to SP2, however the problem was still there with SP1. I'm on a IBM thinkpad R50p type 1832-22M, 1.7g P4m 512m RAM 60g HD 128m video. The camera is a TRV11e Sony. I'm using Ulead Video Studio 6 DVD SE, but the problem is with all the capture software that came pre-installed as well.

The problem is when I connect the camera it says 'found new hadrware' then comes up with, 'there was a problem installing hadware, it may not work properly'. This is 100% true.
When I now turn on the camera it comes up with the windows video wizard and I select Ulead. The program starts but does not full load. If I turn the camrea off the program will finish loading. Then I need to turn the camera on to capture and it tells me it cannot connect to the camrea.

Can anyone help me on this. I have had the camera working on my PC but cannot get it working on my laptop. Im using a PCMCIA firewire adapter that works fine on another laptop.

Sounds like a Firewire PCMCIA drivers issue (or a problem cable). I assume you have the latest drivers for the card ?

I beleive so. I went to the firewire card's site and it said I was running the latest driver.
Also the card, cable, camera and software worked on 2 other laptops. Both Dell.

If its run okay on 2 other systems and not this one, then clearly there is some software (possibly hardware) issue with it. Are all systems running the same OS with same updates etc, probably not. Are the PCMCIA services installed correctly, are there DELL updates for this ?

My laptop is brand new. I've updated windows XP to SP2.
The other laptops are new as well but running SP1. I still had the same problem with SP1.
I've contacted Ulead and they have given me a few things to try. But theyseem to be what I've been trying.
