Sony MicroMV Format (DVD quality but...)

Hi all,

Any one have any idea on how to convert directly (on one step) from the new format Video format introduced by Sony and called MicroMV to DVD (Both actually are MPEG2, however MicroMV ".mmv" MPEG2 has a bit-rate less than half that of the MiniDV or Digital8® format

MICROMV videos take up less hard drive space and are easier to manage. MPEG2's compression system allows for the use of much more compact media. It also sets a new standard in picture and audio quality, and enables quick PC-based non-linear editing using simple drag-and-drop techniques.

The problems is that when connecting the IP5 or IP7 Sony cam to windows system you will be only able to use the Sony Software to connect the camera to the computer (neither the MS Movie Maker, nor Adobe Premiere would work) "Quick time can be used as well if you install it before installing the Movieshaker"

The shitty thing is that Sony Movie Shaker only is a very heavy and limited progrma and not allowing to convert to DV format

Read the Yahoo artical. The unit has a standard Firewire (IEEE 1394) output so your PC needs firewire input. I believe VirtualDUB is capable of capturing via Firewire. You need to install the Movie Shaker prog to get all the supported codec etc. VD captures to AVI, then convert that to MPEG2 for burning to a DVD or convert to the SVCD or VCD standards.

What about TMPgenc

Thank you ChickenMan,

Acutually I am converting from *.mmv to *.avi as this is the only format available to full size convert using Sony MovieShaker.

Then I am converting to DVD (MPEG2) format.

And finally start to use my Pinnacle DV500 and premier to edit the clips

The problem is that it is a lenthy operation specailly when dealing with clips of about one hour time and when adding the time taken by to import the video clips from the cam using movieshaker

As I mentioned I am new to this business, actually I only using it for fun.... but it turned to be F*ck

I tried to convert from AVI to MPEG2 using TMPGEnc 2.54 as some one mentioned it is one of the best Prog... what you think?

Regarding the standard Firewire (IEEE 1394), yes both the video camera and the Pinnacle card have such interface, but.... when the video editing card is correctly installed with the correct driver, Movieshaker can not see the camera, and when just installed using Windows driver, I became able to use the port of the card but nothing else from the card... seems complicated !! - I can not put another Firewire card, as all my 6 PCI slots are occupied so I made two operating systems one correctly configured and the other not.

Any suggestions welcomed,

Best Regards,

Karamany

Sony doesnt make anything easy, so your not alone.

As for AVI to MPEG2, I would suggest using DVD2SVCD (you will also need Cinema Craft Encoder 2.50 ). You can do a 4 pass VBR encode (TMPGEnc can only do 2 max) for a superb output. Get DVD2SVCD from _www.doom9.net

As for your capure card, ect. I assume your running Win XP or 2000? Can be lots of problems with those systems or can be easy. Win 98 SE seems to work with everything. Check for latest drivers for card and camera.

You are totally Right

You are 100% right, I am using XP and although I downloaded the updated 220 Mbyte driver (yes 220 Mb), as the attached one with the cards did not work, it did not work perfectly as well, now there is a new 220 Mb driver & SW, I will download it and going to test it.

I got the DVD2SVCD and CCS 2.5 as well as 2.6, I will start reading your tutorials to get idea what these things are, and how to use it.

Sony is not providing any information on their site, or even allowing to ask questions..

Thanks for the perfect board filled with such valuable information

No probs, hope the new drivers work out okay.

As for DVD2SVCD, I'm still working on a Tut for that method. Check out _www.doom9.net in the mean time. Also, dump CCE 2.6x, use only 2.50
