Sony DW-U10A the Replacement of DRU500A DVD Burner DVD+R/RW/-R/RW/CD-R/RW Drive (Recorder)

Overview

Sony takes the risk out of buying a DVD recorder by bringing all the popular formats into a single drive. The amazing new DW-U10A Replacement of DRU-500A burns DVD-R/-RW, DVD+RW/+R, and even CD-R/CD-RW discs.

* Internal EIDE drive includes an impressive, industry standard software bundle and is compatible with Windows?98SE/2000, Windows ME and Windows XP operating systems.

* DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs recorded on this drive may not play back on some older or entry-level DVD systems. The write-once DVD+R or DVD-R discs are more compatible for interchange with other DVD systems.

Please record responsibly. Before copying anything onto a CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R or DVD+RW, please be sure you are not violating copyright laws.

Hello Folks,

Since Sony is releasing the newer DW-U10A DVD±R/W burner I guess that means the older DRU500A should drop in price.

I wonder if I should start to shop for the older soon to be reduced in price Sony DRU500A or wait for the anticipated release of the Lite-On DVD±R/W.

Could any forum members provide their thoughts on this?

Regards,
Coaster

Indeed, its the same as DRU500A, but OEM- which for many means cheaper/better.
If this is true, which I also believe it is just OEM version then some sites should be shot for trying to pass it off as a new model and charge top whack!

www.bigpockets.co.uk/ , you should be ashamed. Yes you have changed the wording on the drive from yesterday but it is still misleading and at a rip-off price!

I may be wrong, mr. super moderator, but the specs are IDENTICAL.
And since DRU-500 is selling like hot pretzels, some price hike is to be expected.

Not really old friend, as this is an OEM version and not a boxed retail. Why should/would the OEM version be £30/40 (UK) dearer when it comes with nowt?!?! Even if it is a good seller.

I do not think you will see a Pioneer 105 consistently selling for more than an A05 on any online retailer that I know of. ;)

seems that I´ve to join this little discussion ....

1. the specs on the top of this thread aren´t 100% correct , cause DW-U10A writes +R discs @ 4x speed ....

2. the DW-U10A is the oem version of DRU500A ! but with newer firmware ... if u upgrade your firmware DRU500A should also burn +R @ 4x .....

3. Bigpockets .....haven´t seen the old advertising ....but the new one is correct ... -->DW-U10A the OEM Updated version of the DRU500A DVD Writer.... maybe they should point out that only the FIRMWARE was updated ! ;)

There were some big problems with the DRU500a and it's ability to upgrade the firmware. Sony discontinued production in December and rushed to fix the problem. The newer versions, of which this is one (correct- it is the OEM version) cost more and yes the now older DRU500A should drop in price. It would be a good bargain for you if you can find it a lower price, but be aware you may not be able to upgrade the firmware.

Sony has not commited to replacing those units already sold either. Natch. The newer ones start at 4x, not 2.4 as the older one did.

Cheers,

@ DonDamm:

What is causing the inability to upgrade the firmware?
Mine came with firmware 1.0c,and I had no probs upgrading with 1.0d,1.0e,1.0f and a few days ago to 1.0g...

I can burn DVD+R and DVD-R @ 4X,DVD-RW and DVD+RW still @ 2.4X
Will the burning speed of rewritable dvd media increase to 4X too with the new drive??
