yea

i guess i did provoke it apon myself but how do i resolve it? i tried to remove all and only installed dvd decrypter but still nothing

Even after program removal(s) you still have active device drivers in your /windows/system32/drivers folder, which should be removed (easier said than done).

if you already tried a 40-wire IDE cable and the drive as master without slave and still it won't work, so it seems to be a hardware failure;

some DVDROM and DVDRW models having two separated optical parts, one for CDs and one for DVDs; it's reasoned in a different laser wavelength;

If the drive's still under warranty. I'd call Dell or Sony tech support - sometimes they can actually help.

Here's a shot in the dark:
A year ago, when my NEC ND-1100A was only pretending to write DVDs, Dell support had me clear the NVRAM. It's been working without problem since then. Don't know why it worked, the Dell tech guy was reading from a script and didn't explain it to me other than to say that I needed to always format the disc before writing to it. I couldn't find any differences in the BIOS setting between before and after that I couldn't change back to where I had it without causing trouble.

What are ESCD and NVRAM?
Clearing the NVRAM on a PnP system can correct a multitude of problems, ranging from modems that will not configure to a hard drive not recognized by the system.

How Do I Clear NVRAM on my Dell
The 1st section - Dimension 8200, 8100, 4500S, 4300, and 2200 Systems - is the correct set of instuctions for the XPS. The 2nd set is for the XPS R, XPS D, or XPS V series.

When to use Maintenance Mode
Clearing NVRAM
In the event of a hardware configuration change, it is occasionally necessary to clear NVRAM to allow the system to correctly detect and identify the hardware changes.

I've had the same problem with my 530a after burning a CDR. It doesn't want to recognize DVD's. Solution was to uninstall Nero 6. Shut everything down, and then reinstall Nero. Got the DVD stuff back and now stick to burning CD's on the other drive. Weird.

too bad, Dell won't let me read it with a non USA IP...
How rude.
The same documents are on their UK and German sites, in English only.

When you click on the links below select the equivalent of Home or Small Business on the first page your taken to, I do not know my Service Tag on the second page, and select Dimension XPS on the third.

Before clearing the NVRAM there are a couple of other things you can try to see what information you can get about the problem.

1. Turn on your computer. When the blue DELL logo appears, press <F2> immediately. Enter the System Event Log in the BIOS and write down what's logged there.

2. Follow the instructions on page 64 of the Dimension XPS Owners Manual to get to the Dell Diagnostics Main Menu screen, select Custom Test and runall of the Tests listed under CDROM/DVD with a known good DVD and CD. Make note of what's on the Results, Errors, and Help tabs.
