I've been reading several threads here and in other forums asking for help with a problem which I recently was in.
My setup is an Asus P4P800 deluxe mobo with 1GB RAM, an 80Gig Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9, a 3.5" floppy, and a USB 2.0 Enlight 7-in-1 Flash Card reader. My power supply came with the case and was rated at 300W.
My problem started when I tried writing CD-Rs and CD-RWs. It would try to write at any speed but upon running data verification in the bundled Nero Express for my LITE-ON COMBO LTC-48161H, it would always fail and I could only write on a 48X CD-R at 24X and it would take 20 minutes to verify successfully.
Writing at any higher speed would result in a bad block or missing portions of data on the CD.
I then proceeded to test my system with a LITE-ON LTR-16102B and I could easily write at higher speeds and even verify data successfully.
I was almost sure that it was my Combo drive that was faulty since it would only read DVDs, DVD-ROMs but not CD-ROMs, VCDs, or Audio CDs. I had it tested on another rig and it always came back with the assessment that nothing was wrong with it.
I then proceeded to compare the specifications of the two Drives...
The DVD Combo Drive was rated at 5V 1.5A / 12V 1.5A
The CD writer was rated at 5V 1.2A / 12V 1.2A
My Power Supply which came with the computer case was only giving 10A on the 12V rail and 20A on the 5V rail. With my whole setup, it seemed that the power supply couldn't give enough juice.
I then upgraded my Power Supply to a HEC-350VD-T which gave 15A on the 12V rail and 33A on the 5V rail.
My LITE-ON COMBO LTC-48161H 48x24x48 CD-RW & 16x DVD-ROM drive now works at full speed.
I can now write and read at maximum speed and with no verification errors.
My tip here is if there is nothing wrong with your OS, or Drivers , check your power supply... it may be the culprit.
Mabuhay!!!
