Software to block access of certain website

Hi pals, can anyone recommend a proggy that is able to block access to certain websites. For example, kids spend too much time playing internet games and this proggy can configure to block access to these sites. Thanks.

well a simple solution if you know the site name would be to go into your HOST file located on

Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts

Windows NT/2000/XP c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

right click on the Host file click open with notepad then enter

127.0.0.1 www.siteiwantblocked.com

then save the file. by the way the host file has no extension so dont go saving it as a host.txt. now everytime your browser wants to go to www.siteiwantblocked.com it will show up as cannot find site.

go here to learn more about the Host file

http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/how_to_use_hosts.html

Now if you want a software that can do the above and also block certain keywords like sex, xxx etc then i would recommend these
i've heard of about Cyber Patrol and Net Nanny both shareware. im sure there are some freeware out there but you will have to do a search on google.com to find them.

Host file

Thanks chickenhq for the simple solution. Kids nowadays are pretty smart, they may know about the host file and undo what you block as host file is not password protected.

Duracell had suggested using IE, Tool, Internet Options, Connection, and filter off the unwanted site. It is password protected. Thus it cannot be tampered with unless they know the password.

Anyway thanks for all the quick responses and information.

Also any decent firewall should be able to do it.......Sygate has this option, and you can also password protect your configuration...:)

just take care, if your kids install another internet browser (i.e. Netscape, Mozilla, Opera) my suggestion won't work anymore;

computer in the same room and watched closely is usually a sure fire way of keeping tabs on kids using them :)

There are a couple of kid safe browsers/portal browsers out there but again i would advise close monitoring in the same room :)

but minimising these safebrowsers is as easy as pressing two keys "alt + tab" to change windows or "ctrl + esc" to jump back to desktop :(

Yep, it didn't take my kid long 2 bypass net nanny:(

Still like 2 know how he done it

But then he does take after me the crafty terror:)

Yep best form of prevention is 4 U 2 be in the same room & watching
