Sharing Broadband with WI-FI

Hi all
Our exchange has finally hit its trigger point & I am looking to get broadband ASAP !
To cut costs I am wondering about sharing the connection with next door
Has anyone any experience of this ?
Think wireless would be the easiest, would this be able to keep up with broadband ?
Any recommends on the ISP ?
So many questions so many possibilities!!!

THX All

Though 'bout that one

Neighbour doesn't use net half as much as me, especially at un-Godly hours !!!

Thought this way I could get more bandwidth at roughly same price

I don't know how to go about it, but if that is the case (you being on mainly at night etc) then I think it should be fine...but as the Poacher as said, it will be no good if you are on at the same time, for reasons you get BB in the first place..

Yes m8 its totally possible with a wireless network and can make good sense if you work it properly. The range of most wifi is now getting better and with the 54g wireless networks that are available now you dont lose much.I use telewest 2meg cable here and when Im downloading downstairs the other comp which is upstairs downloads at decent speeds too.

Hi

This is my reasoning

If I go it alone with say "PlusNet"

To self install = £60.00 then £18.72 a month......This gets me 512/256

If I share with next door AND upgrade..

To self install = £60.00 (each I think) then £19.36 each....This gets us 1024/256

So if I am on alone I get double the bandwidth ! see my Idea ! :p

Obviously I have to add the cost of the Network gear but I was thinking of toying with that anyway !

P.S

@ bertieg

What kind of speeds can you get over your network ?
and how is it set up with reguards to routers, makes and models ?

Cheers M8

If you are going to share it then only one of you needs to have it installed. It will be best if that person has a wireless router and the other will only need a wireless pci card.I can download at up to 276KB/s on either comp obviously if they are both downloading at the same time it gets slower on each.I have a buffalo 54g wireless router with the upstairs having a wireless card and the downstairs is connected to the router by cable.Using the router means that I dont have to have the main comp on for the upstairs one to have access to the internet. Also dont forget to encrypt it for security.

one problem with wi-fi with neighbours is that its prone to some internet geek/nut warchalking or accesssing your interenet for free with a baked bean can and a laptop !? see http://www.warchalking.org/ for more details ......... lmao im kidding here btw :p

but on a serious note here i would listen to BERTIEG he knows his stuff and runs a home WI-FI network as he said :)

I dont see any reason why this cannot be used in the house next door or over the street/road (you can of course make it a secure WI-FI so no one can patch in as suggested at the http://www.warchalking.org/ site :)

My only issue with this is if your isp has a LIMIT per 24hrs download of usually around 1 gig which can be run up pretty damn quick on one machine nevermind 2 of you sharing the same bandwith :)

You can monitor traffic from your system with various tools to check the amount of data being shifted even on a wi-fi :) as technically you are retransmitting what has come down the line into your machine before being re routed to the other machine (if thats how you are serving)

The only other thing to watch is some ISP's take a dim view on shaing any internet connection even with your own LAN and could decide to either try to make you pay for 2 internet subscriptions or cut your service !? (read the isp of choices terms and conditions for details ) :)

I know mine is still a bit funny about net sharing on a local lan and im on ADSL here :)

but....... what the eye does not see ;)

THX 4 all your advice guys & girl (nice pic BTW ;) )

Will look into WI-FI Router and PCI's

bertieg one thing that confuses me u say u have a 2Meg cable but
only get a 276KB download, is this resticted by the router ?

or am I just missing it totally

I have found that if you need to extend to multiple PCs, then using the Linksys WAP11 (10mb is faster than your SDSL!) is the best choice. Regular Cable/DSL Router with built-in switch -> connect a WAP11 to a port. Connect a WAP11 to a cheap 4-port switch at the remote end. Plug remote PCs into it.

The reason NOT to buy a Wireless Router combo is that I have yet to find one that will support feeding a client WAP (the firmware only allows roaming, not extending the wire). The WAP11's work great this way up to a good 100M if there is not too much interference. I do not know if their newer 54mb WAPs' firmware also allow the client/server setup..

I share my connection too........I share it becouse;other users do not use it much...Just like for regular things like net..mail...And as other guys said..just be carefull with who you are sharing..Couse you dont need somebody who is downloading 24/7 :)

I would be inclined to go the wired route depending how far you are from your neighbour, as you can buy a 4 port 10/100 adsl router for about £50 and network cards for £4 each and length of cat5 cable about 1 hours worth of work ( depending how close you are to your neighbour ) which will leave you with 2 spare 10/100 ports for anyone else in your house to use.

Can't take the wired route as it would involve to much hassle
and there ain't no way they would let me dig up their garden !
Am sure they would be very light users :D
