Setting DMA enable for CDROM/DVD

Hi
I am using Windows ME and am trying to tick the enable DMA for my CD ROM and DVD they are both LITEON and very new

I managed this previously with Windows 98 and I believe ME, but since reformatting my HDD when I tick the box it is again clear after a reboot

Any help please

Thanx

YES YES YES !!!!!!

Thanks for the push in the right direction...I reset my BIOS to defaults etc. and now the DMA checkbox works...I must have changed something...I guess

Thanx

This can happen if any other EIDE drivers are installed ie VIA 4in1's or AMD EIDE Drivers. Here's a cut and paste from the AMD support drivers page.

Q: Using Windows 95/98, the device has a check box for DMA. When I check the box and reboot, the box does not stay checked?

A: The DMA box can only be used with the standard Microsoft driver. When a third party driver is installed (such as the AMD EIDE Driver), the DMA box will not work as intended. If you check the box, then reboot, the box will then appear unchecked. However, the driver is programmed to use all devices in their most optimal configuration. Therefore, if DMA is available for that particular device, the driver will use it.

Q: Why has the DMA box disappeared in the hard disk Device Manager under Windows 95/98?

A: The DMA box can only be used with the standard Microsoft driver. When a third-party driver is installed (such as the AMD EIDE Driver), the DMA box will no longer appear. However, the driver is programmed to use all devices in their most optimal configuration. Therefore, if DMA is available for that particular device, the driver will use it.

Continuing saga

Even though I resolved the problem of the DMA checkbox, I was having all sorts of `registry erors`...Windows will now restart etc, with Windows ME, each time I lost everything I'd done. Eventually I started making my own registry backups and restoring these....Incidently Windows ME restore option sometimes doesn't work !!!!...I think that the problems with ME may have been due to my upgrading the driver for my All in Wonder 128 card to the newest (Proven!!!) version, it all seemed to go wrong from there...Although ME has never been as stable as Windows 98SE...for me anyway....So I've kust fdisked and reformatted and reinstalled 98SE...touch wood all is ok for now, although I have installed the ATI driver before the latest version....Updating ATI card drivers seems to a bit of a nightmare....the only email help I ever get is the standard one on how to uninstall etc etc....which never seems to work...Windows ME keeps insisting that the driver I'm trying to update with `may not have been certified therefore it will not be installed` fat help this is.....then I'm stuck with the standard VGA driver as per ATI instructions.....A reformat is the only answer....Sorry to get on my soapbox, but it's been a bad week for me and my PC

Try installing the chipset drivers that are included in the Mainboard support CD. An upgrade to Win2k is also recommended.

Yes

I do install the chipset drivers.....I have downloaded an Automatic AMD chipset driver install program which detects which drivers are needed, seems to work ok...Although on my original CD there was a miniport v 4.71 I think !! driver, but seems not to be present on the auto install program, unless iot appears as a different name !!!!

I reinstalled Windows 98SE after a format just after all the drivers were installed, all going ok, the CD ROM's dissapeared from the Device manager, the BIOS detected them but they were missing on Windows, tried a few things, but had to reformat AGAIN now I have 98SE and all SEEMS ok......I seem to spend more time formatting and sorting out windows/drivers problems than actually using the PC for what it should be imtended
