I saw 3-4 HDD's with the same problem.
As far I know the best solution is the trash can.

Sorry, I don't know where is that for you. :D

how about bringing it into a shop for a checkup (am sounding like a broken record here lol).
Look for one that has a proworkstation (h**p://www.proworkstation.com) for repairs (if possible). Otherwise take it apart & have fun =). Make great ornaments lol

WHOA!

h**p://www.seagate.com/support/service/warranty_validation.html

Verify warranty, a 40Gb ought to be in warranty, and if the problem is not discernable to be of traumatic origin, you may be able to get a swap.

I did!
Bought a 1.2Gb (some time back) off a radio rally (fair/hamfest etc.) table for 5 quid - it was dead, of course, but had 3 weeks warranty left.
They sent me a 1.7Gb as a replacement (I guess they had no 1.2's left)

So I DO hope you haven't thrown it!

That was the second time - I'd reminded a friend to do the same for one from a boot sale before that!

Not a waste

Open it up. make an asthtray.
Open it, take it to a pub and show some drunk where all the expensive programs on the disk are and trade it for some free drinks, FAR away form home.

Does it spin, as well as clicking?

If there's no spinup, and no other hope, a sideways tap as it's powering up, or holding it and twisting sharply in its horizontal plane, may break loose a stiction problem. But even if you do get it to start, the only thing to do is to get anything off that you can!

I could be wrong - stiction may be confined to older drives, as modern drives lock the heads away from the surface when parked.

Dear me, have 40Gb drives been out long enough to be out of warranty? - must have been hellishly expensive to start with!
