Scanner

I just got an scanner epson1200s from my neighbour...It`s old few years but looks like it`s a good one for what i need---scanning cd covers and copy few documents//per year!!!Problem is;It`s connecting via parallel port((25 pins)....On my pc i got only 1 parallel port and its used by my printer allready!!!!Questions are as follow??? 1.)Is it possible to buy some kind of multiparallel port jack--to connect 2 devices on 1 port?Or couse i got few free usb and fireware ports--is it any connector kind of paralell to usb or 1394/conversion???? 2.)Can i scan directly from surething3.11 to printer when i make covers--i think yes but i`m not sure?? 3)Some opinion for some nice and simple software(freeware or not--doesent matter) for basic things like:scanning cds and office documents(basic ones)????Any input is more then velcome!!!:)

There are some LPT port switches that connect two or more devices to the computer port, and they don't even need manual switching- it's done automatically by the hardware when a signal is detected.

The Epson twain driver should be fine- at least it is fine for my Epson Perfection 1640 SU scanner.
If you have some bucks to spare you can check the Silverfast twain drivers, or if you manly run Linux then the Sane backends offer almost perfect support for all Epson scanners.

Doesn't the scanner have a passthrough to the printer?

Otherwise, I believe you can get extra ports on a PCI card, and even USB to parallel - though support of a USB to parallel device may be a problem (more likely to be successful with the printer than the scanner)

**** I don't like that "S" and "parallel" together ****
If it's this one - Perfection 1200S

It's **SCSI**, not parallel - and you need a SCSI card - auction sites seem to have a steady supply of secondhand Adaptec cards

I know bud--now!!!Couse the idiot who gave me he never use it....He told me its.....Anyway saw your post earlier and you`re right--scsi....Went to store and found one used scsi--adaptec aha2940au....Bought it and plugged and windows recognized it instantly.....Btw,since im running xp and never had a scsi;I got that one scsi card and scanner and all other things are ide--can they live together in peace--most important for me???Second how`s that 2940--any good----just curius????It was a cheap anyway,so will stick with it as long as scanner is working:) :) And last one--do i live it with those xp default drivers or to upgrade couse on adaptec site found only drivers for win2000???Btw no more forceaspi for me--from today im going with aspi Legit--Just like this board:D :D :D

That scanner will work fine there should be no conflicts with your IDE
Make sure that the Scanner is set as the last item on your SCSI bus (Even though its the only one)

Also now U got SCSI Find A plex SCSI Plextor Ultraplex 40max ROM very good ROM

2940 - what I'd have recommended actually (well, that, or a BIOS-less card such as the 2906). Of course, there should have been an original card with it!
Biggest aggro is the price of the cable - and if the scanner has a 25 and the card has the 50 micro-D, then that's fortunately one of the more common ones - not sure if it's SCSI-1 to SCSI-2

No problem mixing SCSI/IDE - I have a setup like it. The SCSI card can be a bit dodgy about sharing IRQs - in Win98, shring between mass storage controllers (SCSI, IDE, NET and possibly USB) is not supported (but mine seems to be ok with it).

My own card is an "OEM" Compaq 2940U/UW - reflashed to a later retail BIOS.

SCSI scanners are usully faster than parallel or USB, and those with a choice of interface usually perform better on SCSI.

Ok, now the software - I suppose the guy lost THAT!

PS. Don't think you have any driver choice - the XP-native drivers are probably the latest for this card anyway.

Well atleast i got a good one....About the cabl price--you must have vent to adaoptec site couse those crooks charging 300 us $ and additionall 115 for cable????????You have to be insane to buy there???        Scanner went to #7 and i guess from todfay i got my covers--made in home......I found that epson twain driver--works fine with surething--so will stick it with that!!!Thanks to all of you guys!!!!!About ultraplex--if i buy new case:D :D couse got 2 burners allready and pioner dvd-reader--so i guess when i buy new mashine--oir external---Do they make scsi external--ult.plex???

Ultraplexes were also available as external- but Plextor has stopped production a couple of months ago. You can find one in stock though- the external one costs as much as three internal IDE burners.

External SCSI cables tend to be expensive in general - as well as being dirty great hosepipes that don't bend very well!

If you run low on IDE ports, you could always consider SCSI to IDE converters.

That ONE SCSI card can drive 7 devices in total, on external and internal chains (if only one side is used, the card will normally default to autoterminating the other, so it places itself at the end, instead of accepting a position in the middle)

NB. You must power up the scanner before the system, or it will not be detected - at least, that's how my HP one works!

Ok gyus!!Just trying the things and that epson driver is not bad!!__But still i would like some software which can do scanning and printing.....For example sw should scan it and gives me some printing options--all in one!!!!Any suggestions couse i never used those things>>Something small, nice and freeware would be nice???Any suggestions????

I wqill try those...Irfanwiev and nico seems ok..But is it card should be #7,and scanner #2,couse thats the weay its supposed to be working on my pc???

ID7 is reserved for all the SCSI interfaces I have met up to now, and the default ID for bootable devices is ID3 (can be changed). use another ID for the scanner, and I don't think you will ever encounter a problem. I use ID3 for an Ultraplex40 and ID5 for an epson perfection 1640 SU scanner on my puter (Adaptec 2930CU) and both work fine, even when I disable the SCSI bios (but no boot facilitries with bios disabled of course- just faster boot initialization times).
My scanner uses auto termination, maybe yours doesn't, and you have to use a termination jumper. Consult the device handbook.

Normally, 7 is reserved for the adapter, 0 and 1 for disk devices.

ID setting methods vary...
For the card, this looks a reasonably good reference
http://www.vidar.com/scsi.html
If it's set to, it will prompt for the CTRL-A, but it can be used at the appropriate point (or just keep trying) even if there is no prompt.

The devices may be autoconfigured by SCAM support (see BIOS option for the card), or may be set on the device - by a rotary ID switch, dipswitch/jumper bank, or by button pushing with a light-blink or menu feedback (my HP scanner is button/blink)

If thats correct im ok couse my card went to 7 and scanner is 2--so imok...I wouldnt change that couse everything works nice--thanks god!!!That scsi utility comes when reboot and thats about it!!!My problem is--whenever i scan cd covers with nico, irfanwiev or windows utility i get--see attachment..So i when i make cover in surething(cdr label)i got to adjust object properties manually--whick is ok but.........................How i can save a proper size????so i can just drop a correct size picture in surething so i dont need to edit a properties on picture?????Or juyst try to fit a picture in your label editor and youll see what the problem is???????????
