router problems

I have a linksys BEFSX41 router, and im tryin to set up a small network to the internet, but every time i plug in the network cable from my motorola SB4100 cable modem into the wan socket on the router, the indicator lights dont come on. ive tested the wan socket by looping a network cable from the wan socket to one of the other sockets, and the indicator lights come on then. can any one help me???

Check to make sure that your Linksys is set to DHCP on the WAN side.

Does it need a crossed / uncrossed cable ?

yeah, its set to DHCP...
it needs an uncrossed, i even tried a crossed, just to make sure, and it didnt work either...

Can you connect to the Web directly,download the latest firmware for the router,install it,and try again?

i attempted to upgrade the firmware, and when i do, around 3/4 of the way thru, it stops, and says theres a data error...

Are you still able to get into the router menue ?

If so then download the fw again and give it another try.
