ROM Drive won't read burned DVD-R

I'm not a n00b so bear with me. I have an OptoRite DD0203 4x burner. I have burned all of my app data to a Princo 4x DVD-R. I was able to confirm and verify the burn after all was said and done. I was able to also explore (WIN XP Pro) the disc after I burned. Now, several weeks later, after I've removed all the contents off my system and I needed to get back to that DVD-R, I am not able to read it.

The Optorite just says "no media inserted" or something like that. I also have a Samsung Combo CD-R/DVDR. When I insert the DVD-R into the Samsung, I also get some very strange behavior. The read light strobes green for several minutes (as though it is trying to read and index the disc) and then my explorer locks up.

Any help or suggestions would be HUGELY appreciated.

Thanks,

Jesse

I've tried reading in a different computer, but with the same results.

FYI, here's a list of drivers for my drives (and I do have IMAPI service off):

AnyDVD.sys
cdrom.sys
ElbyCDFL.sys
ElbyDelay.sys
imapi.sys
MxlW2k.sys
PxHelp20.sys
redbook.sys
storprop.dll

See anything out of place?

I can only see in there CloneDVD/AnyDVD, RecordNow and Musicmatch Jukebox, cannot think of any potential problem. Since it can't be read in another computer too, I guess it's another typical case of Princocrap...
What did you use to burn the disk? - just to get sure that the disk is not open. You might have to install the same program which you used to burn the disk and close it, if for some reason it failed the first time. If you used RecordNow the first time too, you might have used "TAO Open" by accident, or the option to add more data to the disk later.

I used Nero 6.0.0.19 and burned it with Joliet support and fnalized the Disc-At-Once session. It used to read just fine. Now it doesn't. I need to do some more external reader applications.

Do you think that AnyDVD could cause it to potentially stop reading?

Just shut down AnyDVd and see yourself (hit also alt+ctrl+del and see if any related to anydvd process is running)... but since it did not read in the other computer too, I doubt it. Anyway before reading a disk, get sure than no TSR "trickers" like AnyDVD, CloneCD tray or Alcohol tray are active. Usually this sums up to something like your empty or rewritable media being unrecognizable, and not burned ones, but it's better to play safe...

I couldnt agree more.

jessenj, if one is going to store your valuble irreplaceable data to a DVDR why would you choose the absolute cheapest dvdr you can find ? You get what you pay for.

Are you referring to my media brand (Princo) or are you referring to the DVDR unit (Optorite)? In either case, I would agree with you that general rule of thumb is to go with the best quality for sensitive data, however, it doesn't explain why I was able to read it fine after I burned. I was able to verify in two seperate computers, and now, I'm no longer able to read the disc and no damage has been done to the disc. I could understand it if there was a scratch or fingerprint, but i've been burning since the 1x CDR days and I've only seen this problem occur a couple of times.

I also wanted to mention, although I'm not sure if it makes a tremendous difference, but I had my MB overclocked 10% faster than the CPU is rated. While I don't understand how this could cause any hangups, especially now, after having burned over 1000 cdrs and dvdrs, I did want to bring things back to as close to a plain vanilla.

Let me ask you one question that I'm unsure of:

Why is it that, even though my CDR and DVDR are on the secondary controller on my MB, when Explorer tries to even find the title for the disc when inserted, my HD light stays steady red?
